Hoosiers Trail After Day One of Texas, Michigan Double Dual

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's swimming and diving team picked up four individual wins to highlight day one of a double dual meet with Texas and Michigan at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Texas leads Indiana (159-99) and Michigan (175.5-82.5) in the meet, while the Wolverines hold a slim 130-128 lead over the Hoosiers. The meet concludes Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Hoosier quartet of Sara Delay, Margaux Farrell. Stephanie Armstrong and Taylor Wohrley took third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.05. Texas won the race with an NCAAB cut of 1:32.22, followed by Michigan in 1:34.34.
Freshman Lindsay Vrooman just missed an NCAA provisional mark in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:52.81, finishing third. She was just ahead of teammate Brittany Strumbel who touched the wall in 4:52.96. Nikki White was fifth in a season best 4:54.94.
Allysa Vavra paced the Hoosiers in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.39, good for third. Ashley Jones was fourth at 2:04.25, and Brittany Barwegen sixth in 2:04.34, a new career best.
The Hoosiers and Wolverines were tied after three events with 27.5 points each, with Texas holding a 17-point lead over IU and a 15-point advantage over Michigan.
Delay was third in a competitive 50-yard freestyle field with a time of 23.77. Farrell was fifth, clocking in at 23.91, and Strumbel seventh (24.01). Strumbel topped her career best in the 50 free by 1/100th of a second.
Gabby Agostino picked up a win for Indiana in the 1-meter springboard competition with a score of 318.85. Laura Ryan was second 304.30, with Logan Kline fourth (289.20). This gave IU a four-point lead over the Wolverines and brought the Hoosiers to within five points of Texas.
The morning session wrapped up with the 400-yard medley relay as Wohrley, Vavra, Barwegen and Farrell finished fourth in 3:47.39.
Entering the evening session, Michigan led the Hoosiers 57.5-52.5, with Texas holding a 64-46 lead over IU. Texas also led Michigan by a 64-46 score.
The night swim began with the 200-yard medley relay and it was a tie for the top IU finishers as Ashley Jones, Bronwyn Pasloski, Brenna MacLean and Margaux Farrell on the B team and Kim Tracey, Katelyn Ishee, Vrooman and Strumbel on the C team posted times of 1:48.66.
In an exciting 400 individual medley race, Vavra recorded her first NCAA B cut of the season with a time of 4:16.13, three seconds ahead of second-place finisher Leah Gingrich of Texas. Jones was fifth in 4:20.59 and Barwegen sixth (4:24.05). Kim Tracey rounded out the top eight in 4:29.03.
Despite doing the tough double by swimming the 100 butterfly immediately after the 400 IM, Barwegen was the top Hoosier in the event with a time of 56.20 (seventh). MacLean took 10th with a time of 57.25.
Strumbel put up Indiana's second individual victory of the day with a season best of 1:50.36 in the 200 freestyle. Courey Schaefer took third in 1:51.00, with White eighth in 1:52.03.
Ashley Specht was third in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:04.39, with Pasloski fifth at 1:04.66, a season best. Jones paced the Hoosiers in the 100 backstroke with her time of 57.52 (sixth), followed by Tracey in seventh (57.65).
Agostino made is a sweep of the day's diving events with a winning mark of 366.10 in the 3-meter springboard competition. Kline finished fourth (302.50), with Amy Cozad sixth (295.35).
The diving results gave Indiana a seven-point lead over the Wolverines heading into the final event of the day, the 800 free relay. The team of White, Strumbel, Schaefer and Vavra touched fourth in 7:30.27, but second and fifth-place finishes my Michigan gave the Wolverines a 130-128 lead heading into the final day.
