BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Rowing's Varsity 8 crew placed eighth out of 45 teams in their race at the Prince Chase on Sunday, Oct. 31, on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
"We're really excited about the results," said head coach Steve Peterson. "This is one of the best results that we've had in a fall race. We haven't had a great week of practice because of the wind that we had and we had to borrow a boat that we weren't used to, but we're just really excited how the women stayed together and really fought through today's race. It shows that our training is going the right way. For us to beat the teams we did today, that's just really exciting."
The Hoosiers finished in 15:22.103 in the 3-mile head-race, beating out Princeton's `B' crew (15:22.241) at the finish line. The Hoosiers also beat Minnesota's top crew by nearly four seconds (15:26.637), Princeton's Lightweight `A' crew (15:30.954), Brown's `B' crew (15:30.991), Pennsylvania `A' (15:31.353), Northeastern 15:36.044) and Boston `A' (15:36.931).
"We started out aggressively and our goal was to go out and chase Boston down and catch them, which we did," Peterson added. "Cornell actually moved up half way through the race close to us and we were able to move away, despite them catching us toward the end. But all in all, it was a great race for our team."
"I think we were really excited going into the race and wanted to go after and catch up to Boston University, which is exactly what we did," said IU junior Cara Donley. "And then after we walked through them, we blasted past Syracuse. It's the best finish ever for IU so we're are hoping to bring this confidence back to our team and into next weekend against Notre Dame."
Princeton's `A' crew won the event with a time of 14:22.518, followed by Virginia `A' in 14:32.112 and Dartmouth `A' in 14:57.767.
"We went into the race confident and this is definitely one of the strongest teams we have had in a long time," said IU junior coxswain Alex Burkle. "During the race, we were constantly around and passing other boats. It was the most fun I have had at a fall race. And coming off this race, we are excited to bring this momentum to all of our other races."
Indiana will continue the fall slate with a scrimmage against Notre Dame in Indianapolis on Sunday, Nov. 7.
