BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Redshirt senior Paul Young made a run to the 157 lbs. championship match at the 2010 Southern Scuffle, defeating five adversaries in the process and leading the Hoosiers to a 13th place finish out of 34 schools in the competition.
Young's most impressive victory came in the semifinals when he avenged an earlier season loss, this time beating out seventh-ranked Bryce Saddoris of the Naval Academy. The Bloomington, Ind., native finished off a single-leg trip late in the second period for a takedown to grab the 4-2 lead. He then rode out Saddoris for the entire third frame, erasing his riding time deficit and securing his spot in the championship match. Young, ranked ninth nationally, is now 18-4 on the season.
Indiana's two heaviest wrestlers also placed in the one of the country's biggest Division-I collegiate wrestling tournaments as 197-pound Matt Powless and heavyweight Ricky Alcala reached the stand.
Powless ripped off six `W's in seven contests, three via major decision. His third-place effort improved his season record to an impressive 24-2. Meanwhile, Alcala had his hand raised four times during the two-day event, earning seventh place.
The Cream and Crimson return to University Gym for their next competition, hosting the IU Quad on Sunday, Jan. 9th. Indiana will face Cleveland State, SIU-Edwardsville and Gardner-Webb; starting at 10 a.m.
