Both Kinser and Powless won five of six matches en route to their third-place showings. Kinser tallied his fifth and sixth pins of the season while Powless ran his overall record to 15-1 on the year.
Kinser, wrestling at 149 pounds this season, advanced to the semifinals of the championship bracket before suffering his first defeat. He then avenged an earlier season loss to UNC-Greensboro's Ivan Lopouchanski to start his wrestleback. Kinser earned a 9-4 decision over 12th-ranked Lopouchanski to move onto the consolation finals. The Bloomington, Ind., native then took out the 11th-ranked 149 lbs. wrestler in the country, Brian Stephens (Virginia Tech), to snag third place.
Powless took much the same path, advancing to the championship round semifinals and posting a pair of wins over nationally-ranked foes. He notched a 3-1 decision over #19 Riley Orozco of Cal State Bakersfield early on before blasting Michigan's #15 Anthony Biondo, 8-3, in the third-place bout.
Indiana's first Big Ten tussle comes early this season as the Northwestern Wildcats come to town in less than two weeks on Dec. 15 for a dual match. That brouhaha will be broadcast live at BigTenNetwork.com.
