SETTING THE SCENE
• The Hoosiers look to defend their Big Ten title as they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for the 2010 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
• Nikki White (500 freestyle), Kate Fesenko (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke) are defending individual champions, while Indiana is the defending champion in the 400 medley relay.

NEWS AND NOTES
• Indiana kept its win streak against rival Purdue in tact with a 166.5-133.5 victory on Jan. 23.
• This year's senior class will graduate having never lost to the Boilermakers.
• Margaux Farrell, Kate Fesenko and Allysa Vavra were all double winners for the Hoosiers.
• Farrell had season bests in the 100 free and 200 free to win both events.
• Fesenko posted another dominating performance in the 200 backstroke, while also taking the 200 butterfly. She remains undefeated in the 200 back this season.
• Vavra was victorious in the 200 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley.
• Freshman Taylor Wohrley picked up an NCAA B cut in the 100 back (1st-54.73) and narrowly missed out in the 200 back (2nd- 1:59.35).
• The Hoosiers went 4-0 against Big Ten opponents in dual meets this season. Indiana's only loss came at No. 3 Texas.
• Indiana posted a 130-113 win at No. 16 Michigan on January 9.
• Indiana won nine events, including a sweep of the diving competition.
• Gabby Agostino took the 1-meter and 3-meter titles, both with season-best scores.
• Amy Korthauer completed the sweep by winning the platform.
• Brittany Strumbel won the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:49.67.
• Fesenko won the 200 backstroke in 2:01.74.
• The rest of the Hoosiers traveled to Kentucky on Dec. 5 where they finished in a 149-149 tie with the Wildcats.
• Strumbel, Taylor Wohrley and Margaux Farrell each posted a pair of victories for Indiana.
• At the Ohio State Invitational, Korthauer won the women's platform title with a score of 294.25.
• The Hoosiers posted eight victories at the 2009 Hoosierland Invitational, Nov. 20-22 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
• Fesenko led the way with wins in the 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 butterfly. Her time of 1:57.83 in the 200 fly is the fastest by a Hoosier this year and an NCAA B cut, while she went 53.15 in the 100 back.
• Allysa Vavra won the 400 individual medley, while Korthauer won the platform diving competition with a school-record score of 388.95.
• Cassie Luhrsen was victorious in the 1,650 freestyle, and the Hoosiers also took the 800 free relay title.
• Brittany Barwegen finished second in the 100 breaststroke, posting the fastest time by a Hoosier this season with a 1:04.52.
• Indiana posted a 215-174 win over Big Ten foe Michigan and fell 222-162 to Texas in a double dual meet in Austin, Oct. 30-31.
• Fesenko remains unbeaten in the 100 back and 200 back, nearly posting an A cut in the 100 back with a time of 53.30. She went 1:55.56 in the 200 back.
• Fesenko also took second in the 100 fly and 200 individual medley.
• Strumbel took third in the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:52.37.
• Luhrsen led the way with a fourth-place finish in the 1,650 free (17:08.16), followed by Allysa Vavra in sixth (17:25.83).
• Vavra won the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.90 and posted the second-fastest time of the year by a Hoosier in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.72 (fifth). She was also third in the 400 IM with an NCAA B cut of 4:15.84.
• Barwegen took second in the 200 fly, improving her NCAA B cut with a time of 1:59.83.
• Korthauer won the platform competition in Texas with a score of 279.90, while Gabby Agostino was fourth in the 1-meter springboard.
• Fesenko got her senior season off to a fast start, setting pool records and posting NCAA B cuts in the 100 back and 200 back at Northwestern.
• Entering her first full season as a Hoosier, Vavra posted wins in the 1,000 free and 500 free at Northwestern.
• Korthauer posted a career best and NCAA Zone-qualifying score of 311.85 on the 1-meter springboard at Northwestern.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Senior Kate Fesenko has never lost a 100 or 200 backstroke race in Big Ten dual meet competition.
FESENKO WINS TWO TITLES AT SHORT COURSE NATIONALS
• Fesenko won two national titles at the 2009 U.S. Short Course Nationals in December.
• Fesenko went 1:52.54 in the 200 back, and NCAA A cut. She also earned her A cut in the 100 back with a winning time of 52.70.
• She also went a season best in the 100 fly (53.19) and was part of top-10 finishes in the 400 free relay (ninth), 800 free relay (4th) and 400 medley relay (9th).
• Donna Smailis posted an NCAA B cut and finished 11th in the 100 free (49.65). She was also 10th in the 200 free with an NCAA B cut of 1:47.05. Nikki White picked up an NCAA B cut in the prelims of the 200 free with a time of 1:49.98.
• White was 10th in the 500 free with an NCAA B time of 4:46.24, and finished 15th in the 1,650 free (16:45.26).
• Smailis was seventh in the 100 back with a season best time of 53.65, an NCAA B mark.
• Allysa Vavra took 19th in the 200 breaststroke with a season best and NCAA B time of 2:15.23. She was also 8th in the 400 IM with an NCAA B time of 4:13.73 in the prelims.
• Brittany Barwegen posted her fastest time of the year in the 200 fly at nationals with a mark of 1:59.80, good for 19th place.
• Smailis, Fesenko, White and Vavra combined for an NCAA B cut in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:20.70.
LOUISVILLE RECAP
• Buoyed by three first-place finishes from senior Kate Fesenko, nine overall victories and seven pool records, the 14th-ranked Indiana women's swimming and diving team defeated No. 13 Louisville, 161-139 on Jan. 29 at Ralph Wright Natatorium in Louisville, Ky. The IU women finished their dual meet season with a 5-1-1 record.
• Fesenko, Ashley Specht, Donna Smailis and Margaux Farrell opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.22. Indiana's squad of Kim Tracey, Allysa Vavra, Brittany Barwegen and Schaefer took fifth (1:47.37).
• Indiana's first win of the night came in the 1,000 freestyle as Nikki White touched the wall first in 9:59.35, a new pool record. Cassie Luhrsen made it a 1-2 finish for the Hoosiers with a time of 10:08.63, while Ashley Kranz was fifth (10:22.18). Laura Head finished in eighth place at 10:32.42.
• Brittany Strumbel was victorious in the 200 freestyle for the third time this season, posting a season best 1:48.87, which is an NCAA B cut. Margaux Farrell was third in 1:49.15, with Ashley Jones fifth (1:51.02) and Courey Schaefer seventh (1:52.66).
• Kate Fesenko extended her unbeaten streak in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.58, nearly a full second ahead of second-place finisher Donna Smailis (55.54) and a new pool record. Taylor Wohrley made it a 1-2-3 sweep for IU with a time of 55.67.
• Brittany Barwegen was just off her season best in winning the 200 butterfly, finishing in 1:59.98, Indiana's third pool record of the night. Kim Tracey took fifth (2:08.22), followed by White (2:14.64) and Head (2:15.05).
• Allysa Vavra took third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.42, which is a season best. Specht was fourth in 1:05.42, just 2/100ths of a second off her season best, followed by Amilee Smith in sixth (1:05.18) and Katelyn Ishee in eighth (1:07.07).
• Farrell posted the fifth-fastest time of the season for IU in the 50 free, clocking in at 23.81 for fifth place. Wohrley was sixth in 24.09, followed by Justine Jones in seventh (25.16) and Kristen Mitsch in eighth (26.49).
• The Hoosiers picked up nine points in the 1-meter diving competition, taking the second through fifth-place spots. Gabby Agostino tallied 290.77 points to take second, followed by Christina Kouklakis (272.47), Logan Kline (272.02) and Cassidy Kahn (270.75-career best). Nicole Brehm was seventh with 233.24 points, followed by Amy Cozad in eighth (229.80) and Amy Korthauer ninth (197.69).
• Smailis was victorious in the 100 freestyle, posting a time of 50.60 which is the third fastest by a Hoosier this season. Strumbel was fifth in 52.15, with Schaefer seventh (52.59-season best) and Justine Jones eighth (54.36).
• Trailing Louisville by one point after the 100 free, the Hoosiers took the lead for good with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 backstroke, led by Fesenko. Fesenko, who is unbeaten in the event this year, clocked a time of 1:57.16, her second pool record of the night. Wohrley was second in 2:00.01, with Ashley Jones third in a season-best time of 2:00.54. Tracey took seventh with her time of 2:07.95.
• Vavra was the top Indiana finisher in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.68. Ishee was sixth in 2:22.31, with Specht eighth (2:23.23).
• Strumbel bettered her previous NCAA provisional time in the 500 free with a mark of 4:52.10, good for second place. White was third in 4:53.63, followed by Cassie Luhrsen in fourth (5:01.82). Kranz held the No. 8 spot with a time of 5:10.30.
• Fesenko's third victory of the night came in the 100 butterfly where she topped all competitors with a time of 54.16, her third pool record of the night. Barwegen was third in 55.47, a season best, followed by Tracey in seventh (57.91).
• Agostino again led the Hoosier divers, this time in the 3-meter springboard competition where she took second with a score of 317.70. Kline was third with 294.30 points, followed by Kouklakis in fourth (291.15). Cozad placed sixth (259.13), with Korthauer seventh (253.58), Brehm eighth (237.15) and Kahn 11th (166.73).
• In the final individual event of the night, Vavra bested the field in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:16.48, giving IU its sixth pool record of the meet. Ashley Jones was third in a time of 4:20.84, with Smith fifth (4:25.55).
• With the meet well in hand, Indiana closed things out with a season best and NCAA B time and pool record in the 400 free relay as Farrell, Wohrley, Smailis and Strumbel went 3:23.51 for the win. White, Schaefer, Barwegen and Ashley Jones placed fifth in 3:32.45. .
KORTHAUER IS BIG TEN DIVER OF THE WEEK
• Indiana University senior diver Amy Korthauer is the Big Ten Women's Diver of the Week, the conference office announced on Feb. 9.
• Korthauer will represent the United States at the 2010 World Cup after her second-place finish on the platform at the USA Diving Winter National Championships in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday. Korthauer tallied 355.40 points in Saturday's final and that score was added to her semifinal total of 321.95 for a score of 677.35. She was trailing Katie Bell by 8/10ths of a point heading into the final but outscored Bell by 5.7 points in the final to secure her spot. The FINA World Cup is the premier international diving event in this non-Olympic year.
IU WOMEN EARN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD
• The Indiana University women's swimming and diving team was recently named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar-Athlete All-America list.
• The list recognizes programs that achieve a grade-point average of 3.00 or higher in the fall semester. The 341 men's and women's teams, representing 241 colleges and universities is the largest number of award recipients since the CSCAA raised the criteria for selection in 2008.
• The Indiana women's swimming and diving team posted a 3.25 team GPA in the fall semester, which ranks sixth among all Big Ten schools.
INDIANA REPRESENTED AT 2010 FINA DIVING WORLD CUP
• Indiana women's diving will be well-represented at the 2010 FINA Diving World Cup, June 2-6 in Changzhou, China.
• Senior Amy Korthauer earned a spot on the World Cup team by virtue of her second-place finish in the platform competition at the 2010 USA Diving Winter National Championships on Feb. 6.
• Recent graduate Christina Loukas, the 2009 NCAA Champion and 2008 Olympian, will compete in the 3-meter springboard after winning her first national title in the event at the Winter National Championships.
• Loukas also won the 3-meter synchro title with partner Kelci Bryant, and it is possible the two could represent the U.S. at the meet in the event.
• Also at the national championships, Brittney Feldman, who is redshirting this year, finished second in the 1-meter springboard.
• Freshman Amy Cozad and incoming freshman Laura Ryan won a national title in the synchro platform event.
• The World Cup Synchro Trials will take place April 10-11 in Indianapolis.
HOOSIERS NO. 14 IN DUAL MEET POLL
• Indiana moved down two spots to No. 14 in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America Division I top-25 poll released on January 21.
• The Hoosiers were No. 9 in the inaugural poll, followed by No. 12 in the second poll.
• Minnesota is the top-ranked Big Ten team at No. 10, followed by the Hoosiers, No. 16 Michigan, No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 22 Purdue and No. 23 Northwestern. Ohio State, Penn State and Iowa are also receiving votes.
• The Hoosiers have posted dual meet wins this year over No. 16 Michigan (twice), No. 22 Purdue and No. 23 Northwestern.
2009 WAS A RECORD-SETTING SEASON
• It was a busy year keeping up with the record-setting pace of the Indiana women's swimming and diving team.
• A total of 16 records were set and re-set over the course of the season.
• Freshman Nikki White made a personal assault on the record book, setting new marks in the 200 free and 500 free. Her time of 1:45.61 in the 200 free came on the lead-off leg of the 800 free relay at the Big Ten Championships.
• In the 500 free she blasted her way to a time of 4:36.61 at the Hoosierland Open in November of 2008. At the time it was won of the top-10 individual swims in American history in the event.
• In all, White owns three of the five fastest times in the 200 free, three of the five fastest times in the 500 free, and two of the five fastest times in the 1,650 free.
• Senior Allison Kay made IU history in the 1,650 free at the 2009 NCAA Championships by becoming the first Hoosier swimmer to go under 16 minutes with a time of 15:56.60.
• Kay also topped her school record in the 400 IM at the same meet with a time of 4:06.45. Kay owns four of the five fastest times in school history in the 400 IM.
• Junior Kate Fesenko has completely re-written the ledger in the backstroke events. She owns the five fastest times in school history in the 100 back, including her Big Ten record of 51.52 set at the 2009 Championship meet.
• She also holds the top-five times in the 200 back with a school and Big Ten record-setting mark of 1:51.45 set at the 2009 Big Ten Championships.
• Fesenko has also made the 100 butterfly record her own with a time of 52.44 at Big Tens. She owns four of the five fastest times in school history in the event. She even has the third-fastest time in school history in the 200 individual medley (1:58.38).
• Senior Sarah Stockwell capped her IU career with amazing performances in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.
• Stockwell became the first IU woman to go under a minute in the 100 breast with times of 59.96 and 59.40 at the Big Ten Championships.
• She also set a new record in the 200 breast at the Big Ten meet with a time of 2:09.84.
• Sophomore Brittany Barwegen added her name in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.22 at the Hoosierland Open in November 2008.
•Ashley Jones posted a record-setting performance in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.24 at the Big Ten Championships.
• In all, the top five times in school history in the 200 free, 500 free, 1,650 free, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM were all set during the 2008-09 season.
• White, Donna Smailis, Amanda Smith and Brittany Strumbel combined to set a new school record in the 800 free relay at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 2:18.09.
• Fesenko, Stockwell, Smailis and Margaux Farrell posted a record time of 1:36.80 in the 200 medley relay and 3:31.26 in the 400 medley relay at the Big Ten Championships.
• Senior Christina Loukas topped her own school record in the 1-meter springboard at the Ohio State Invitational in December 2008 with a score of 375.70.
• She added a school and NCAA record score of 437.75 in the 3-meter springboard at the 2009 NCAA Championships.
