RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - With 18 holes of competition in the books, the Indiana women's golf team sits in eighth place after day one of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Coco Beach Golf Club. The tournament continues with 18 holes each on Monday and Tuesday.
Georgia currently leads the field with a score of 292, followed by Alabama (295), host Purdue (296), Kent State (299) and Oklahoma State (300). The Hoosiers are just five strokes out of fourth place in the 16-team field with a score of 304.
"I think we had a good day today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "It was a long day with a six-plus hour round but I think we did a good job with some of the things we have worked on, especially for our first tournament since November. We need to clean up some of our play around the greens but I thought we were really solid from tee to green. Coming out tomorrow we need to take advantage of our opportunities and work on our short game."
Senior Laura Nochta, who is the defending individual champion at the event, is currently tie for sixth with an even-par 72. Freshman Jacqueline Yanch, competing in her third tournament of the season, is tied for 26th after posting a 4-over 76 on Sunday. Just one stroke behind Yanch and tied for 37th is senior Kellye Belcher with a 77. Junior Cecilia Orevik is tied for 50th after scoring a 7-over 79. Rounding out the group is freshman Kate Coons with a 10-over 82, good for a tied for 73rd.
Indiana will return to the course at 7:10 a.m. ET for round two on Monday.
