Hoosiers Ninth After Two Rounds of UCF Challenge

SORRENTO, Fla. - Playing in perfect conditions, the Indiana women's golf team is ninth after two rounds of play at the UCF Challenge at Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla.
The Hoosiers currently have a two-round score of 603 (303-300), but are just five strokes out of second place. Georgia State leads the field with a score of 591, followed by Texas A&M (598), UCF (598), Baylor (598) and Oklahoma (599) in the top five.
"I thought we did some good things today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "I am relatively pleased with the overall play. We just need to clean some things up here and there. We were hitting some good shots. I hope we can get a full round in tomorrow and have a chance to move up the leaderboard."
With inclement weather expected to hit the area, the teams will tee off at 8 a.m. ET for the final round.
Senior Laura Nochta currently leads the group with a score of 148 (76-72) and is tied for 17th. In round two, Nochta was steady throughout the 18 holes with 14 pars to go along with birdies on 18 and 2. Nochta carded a 4-over 76 over the first 18 holes. She was +3 after eight holes but took a stroke back with a birdie on the par-3 11th hole. She hit par on five of the next seven holes but was hit with back-to-back bogeys on holes 18 and 1. The round ended with a par on two and her second birdie of the round on the par-4 third hole.
Senior Kellye Belcher had a strong second round and moved up into a tie for 22nd with a score of 150 (76-74).Her four bogeys in round two were offset with birdies on the par-5 12th hole and the par-5 second hole, leaving her at 2-over for the round.. Belcher was 4-over with a 76 in the first round. Sitting at +3 through 10 holes, Belcher recorded her first birdie of the day with a two on the par-3 15th hole. She added bogeys on 16, 18 and 2, but came back to go -1 over the final two holes with a birdie on three.
Freshman Pamela Burneski is tied with Belcher in the 22nd spot after posting rounds of 74 and 76. In round two Burneski opened with a bogey on five but followed that with a score of two on the par-3 sixth hole. She would go even over the next eight holes before back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 dropped her to +2. She would finish the day with par on four of the final six holes. Burneski had the low first round for the Hoosiers with a 2-over 74. She was +5 after 15 holes but finished strong with back-to-back birdies on holes three and four to drop back down to two over.
Freshman Kate Coons is tied for 61st with a score of 158. Coons shot a 6-over 78 in round two, with a generally solid round hampered by some compound errors, recording double bogeys on holes 17, 18 and 2. She birdied hole one and finished the day with three straight pars. Coons shot an 80 in round one, highlighted by eight holes of even-par play and birdies on 12 and 16.
Freshman Jacqueline Yanch is tied for 65th with a score of 159 (77-82). Yanch ran into a bit of trouble in round two, including a triple bogey on two and double bogeys on 17 and one. The round started off strong with a score of -1 through the first four holes, including a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole. Yanch was tied for 39th after the first round with a 5-over 77. She was sailing through the first six holes with pars on each before being tripped up with a double bogey on 12 and a bogey on 13. She took a stroke back with her first birdie of the day on 14, but tallied bogeys on 17 and 18. Yanch looked to be making a move with a birdie on the par-4 first hole and an even par on hole two, but a double bogey on three left her five over for the round.
