BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On Saturday, January 20, Indiana Women's Rowing hosted their annual Junior Day where several high school juniors and their parents spent the day seeing what being an IU varsity student-athlete is all about.
It's an important event that the team looks forward to each year as high school juniors are beginning their college search. The juniors observed a varsity practice, toured the boathouse and facilities, met with rowers, had an Athletics Academic Advisor session, and attended an information session with coaches and captains. The captains, Amy Gartenberg (sophomore), Katie Liston (senior) and Emily Kasavana (senior) held an informal question/answer session with the prospective student-athletes and their parents which provided guests with helpful information.
"We received quite a bit of feedback and thank you letters after the event," said assistant coach Conny Kirsch. "They were all very impressed with the program and the facilities."
Head Coach Steve Peterson was very pleased with the turn out and the number of families who traveled from all over the country to attend.
"Getting into college is a difficult affair these days," said Novice Coach, Josh Adam. "It is encouraging to see so many young athletes getting started on this process so early."
The coaches also commented on the number of parents who were former student-athletes in attendance. The culture of Indiana Athletics attracts generational camaraderie as parents who were former collegiate and professional athletes recognize the deep rooted tradition here at Indiana.
