SANTA CLARA, Calif. -
The No. 16 Indiana Hoosiers (10-5) women's water polo team surged past Santa Clara, 13-9, on Saturday, fueled by a four-goal fourth quarter run that was too much for the Broncos to handle. The Hoosiers never trailed, although the game was tight through three periods and included six ties.
"I thought we got things done in the fourth," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We didn't control the game as well as I'd like, but it's nice to come away with a win against a solid opponent."
The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Nicole Redder with four goals. She surpassed the 100 career goal mark during the contest, leaving her with 103 scores and one shy of Janis Pardy for tenth on the all-time list.
Jakie Köhli and Kelly Palmberg each racked up three goals for the Hoosiers. Kelsey Campbell also fired in a pair, while Kara Butler rounded out the scoring attack with one.
Santa Clara jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before the Hoosiers responded with a pair of quality counter-attacks to go ahead 2-1 midway through the first quarter. Köhli converted the first goal after goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff found her near the goal with lengthy outlet pass. The second score was by Palmberg, who converted off a Köhli assist.
Wyckoff finished the game with six saves, two assists, and a pair of steals in a full 32 minutes of action.
The Broncos came back with a power play goal to knot things up at 2-2 during the opening period, but Indiana quickly responded with a three goal flurry to move ahead 5-2 heading into the second quarter. Butler keyed the run when she separated from a defender in the post and converted after Katie Black dished out one of her career-high three assists. Köhli followed it up with a hard skip shot that squeezed past the Bronco keeper. Palmberg then earned a kick-out and promptly rifled a shot into the net to give the Hoosiers the momentum.
Santa Clara mounted a charge of their own to begin the second quarter, notching three consecutive goals to make it 5-5. The Broncos were getting consistent power play chances in that duration as they drew six ejections in the second quarter.
Campbell answered with a score to give the Hoosiers a brief lead before Santa Clara came right back to tie it at 6-6 at the half.
The two teams exchanged goals back and forth throughout the third quarter. Redder scored two of her goals in the third, highlighted by a whirling backhand that sailed past the Bronco goalkeeper. Lauren Wyckoff earned a critical five meter penalty, which Redder skipped in. Köhli then added one at the end of the third, again coming after a long assist from Cassie Wyckoff to take the 9-8 lead going into the final stanza.
Indiana took control in a big way during the final eight minutes, beginning with a Redder tap-in goal after a Butler assist. Lauren Wyckoff then tossed a cross pass to Palmberg for another Hoosier goal to extend the lead to 11-8 with 3:26 to play. Indiana kept the pressure on with Campbell and Redder scoring two goals in a span of 19 seconds to secure the Hoosiers' second straight win.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Sunday at Cal State Monterey Bay at 12:00 p.m. PT.
