BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After spending the last six days of its annual spring break trip gaining mileage, the Indiana rowing team will open the 2010 spring season at the Clemson Sprints on Saturday, March 20 on Lake Hartzell in Clemson, S.C.
"The trip has been going great," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Our student-athletes have been really excited to get back on the water. Since we only have one week to prepare to get back into racing, it's great to see how all off the work during the winter on the ERG machines has really transferred over. We've been getting a lot of mileage in and making a lot of progress in a short time."
The Hoosiers will face Alabama, No. 12 Clemson, Marist and Purdue in head-to-head, 2,000-meter races beginning at 9 a.m. ET.
"It's going to be great competition on Saturday," said. Peterson. "Clemson is ranked No. 12 in the preseason poll. Looking at the limited time we've had on the water and with the first race of the season, I think all of the coaches are really expecting the student-athletes to perform well. We're definitely a little bit less focused on beating teams and more focused on executing at this point in the year. We're looking for the student-athletes to row well and really be aggressive. With more time on the water, we'll get better at the technical aspects. Right now, we're looking for the team to really fight hard this weekend and use what we've learned so far."
Following the Clemson Sprints, the Hoosiers will race Notre Dame, Purdue, Buffalo and Eastern Michigan in the annual Indiana Invitational in Indianapolis on Sunday, March 28, before hosting the second annual Dale England Cup, April 2-3, on Lake Lemon. This year's Dale England Cup will be a tape-delay broadcast on the Big Ten Network and will feature Boston University, Central Florida, Dayton and Miami (Fla.).
Indiana will also host the Big Ten Double Duel, featuring No. 7 Michigan State and No. 9 Michigan on Saturday, April 10, on Lake Lemon.
