BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The second Varsity 8 crew won its grand final to lead the Indiana rowing team at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Sunday, April 18.
After winning Saturday's race in 6:43.30 beating Tulsa by nearly seven seconds, the Hoosiers won their grand final in 7:11.60, topping Oklahoma (7:16.89) by more than five seconds. Purdue finished in third (7:20.08) and were followed by Tulsa (4th, 7:23.38), Alabama (5th, 7:27.97) and Kansas State (6th, 7:36.84). IU's Novice 8 crew also won its final when it defeated Alabama (7:20.10) by four seconds with a time of 7:16.10. The Boilermakers finished in third (7:24.01), with Oklahoma in fourth (7:28.76), Tennessee in fifth (7:42.22) and Central Oklahoma in sixth (8:56.59).
"Overall, it was a good day," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "The second Varsity 8 and Novice 8 races went really well. Both crews were very aggressive and controlled from the start."
On Saturday, IU's first Varsity 8 crew finished just under one second behind Oklahoma with a time of 6:38.38. In today's grand final, the Hoosiers finished less than a second behind the Sooners (2nd, 6:55.09) for third place. IU defeated Grand Valley (4th, 6:56.43), Tulsa (5th, 7:00.74) and Alabama (6th, 7:03.99). In the first Varsity 4 race on Saturday, Indiana finished in second (7:39.89) by less than a second to Alabama (7:39.10). The Hoosiers beat the Sooners (3rd, 7:41.85), Nova SE (4th, 8:10.18) and SMU (5th, 8:14.22). On Sunday, IU's Varsity 4 crew started off strong, but fell behind in the middle of the race and finished in sixth with a time of 8:28.43.
"The first Varsity crew got off the line a little bit slow," added Peterson. "That's something we'll definitely continue to work on, but we were able to row into the third and just came up short of second. The first Varsity really needs to work on getting out of the block faster. It wasn't a bad race, but they didn't really dictate the race the way the second Varsity and Novice crews did. In the varsity 4 race, we were in first or second place, but a mishap in the middle of the race set them back and they weren't able to completely recover."
IU will take the upcoming weekend off from racing before opening the championship season with the Big Ten Championships on Saturday, May 1 on Lake Ovid at Sleepy Hollow State Park in Laingsburg, Mich.
