MADISON, Wis. - With the predicted severe weather never materializing, the third round of the 2010 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships went on as schedule and Indiana is tied for sixth heading into the final 18 holes.
Purdue leads the pack with a 15-stroke lead at 865. It is followed by Ohio State (880), Michigan State (883), Wisconsin (892), Minnesota (894), the Hoosiers and Northwestern (897), Michigan (911), Penn State (918), Illinois (919) and Iowa (931). The final 18 holes will be contested beginning Sunday morning at 9 a.m. ET.
"We had a great effort top to bottom," said head coach Clint Wallman. "I was really inspired by Pam shooting a 75 on an injured leg. Jackie had an outstanding day but couldn't quite convert a few putts. Today was about momentum. We played solid and gave ourselves opportunities, we just couldn't get anything in the hole. Tomorrow I would like to do the same thing but hopefully get one or two of those shots that will give us some momentum and an opportunity to post a low number."
Senior Laura Nochta is tied for sixth after posting a 75 in round three Saturday. Nochta was even through the first three holes but bogeys on six and nine left her at +2 as she made the turn for the final nine holes. She got into a groove as she started the back nine, paring the first four holes until carding her first birdie of the round with a three on the par-4 14th hole. After pars on 15 and 16 she closed the day by bogeying 17 and 18.
Freshman Jacqueline Yanch is also tied for sixth with a team-best 73 in the third round. Yanch bogeyed two of the first three holes but came back with pars on four, six and seven to go along with a birdie on five. A bogey on eight put her at +2 and that is how she made the turn. Yanch birdied 10 to take a stroke back and remained at +1 until carding a five on the par-4 13th hole. She was one under for the final five holes thanks to a birdie on 15.
Senior Kellye Belcher posted her low round of the tournament with a 75 on Saturday and is tied for 29th. Belcher started slow with a double bogey on one before coming back with pars on two and three. She pared five of the next six holes to make the turn at +3. Pars on 10 and 12 sandwiched her first birdie of the day with a four on the par-5 11th hole. With a bogey on 13 she was back to +3. She added another birdie on 15, followed by a bogey on 16. The round ended with back-to-back pars on 17 and 18.
Freshman Kate Coons is tied for 38th after posting a 5-over 77 on Saturday. Coons was +1 after three holes thanks to a bogey on the par-3 third hole. She pared four and six but added another bogey on five to move to +2. After pars on six, seven and eight she recorded her third bogey of the round to drop to +3. After a par on 10 Coons took a double bogey on 11 and a single on 12 to drop to +6. She would go -1 over the final six holes thanks to a birdie on 15.
Despite playing with an injury aggravated on Friday's 36-hole day, freshman Pamela Burneski posted her best round of the championships to date with a 3-over 75 on Saturday and is tied for 45th. Burneski recorded her first birdie of the day on hole two but followed with a bogey on three. She added another bogey on five and was +1 thought six holes. A bogey on eight and a par on nine gave her a 38 on the front nine (+2). Continuing her trend from the ninth hole, Burneski made par on 10 through 14 to remain at +2 with four holes to play. A lone bogey on 17 was her only blemish on the back nine to go along with pars on 15, 16 and 18.
Junior Lauren Giesecke posted her lowest round of the tournament and her second-lowest round of the season with a 76 on Saturday to sit in a tie for 53rd. Giesecke was even through the first two holes until she was tripped up with a bogey on three. She followed with a double bogey on four, but closed out the front nine with pars on the final five holes. Her string of pars was broken with a bogey on 10, but she got right back on track with pars on each of the next four to head into the final four holes at +4. That is how she would finish the day as she hit par on each of the last four holes.
