MADISON, Wis. - After 36 holes of play, the Indiana women's golf team is in sixth place at the 2010 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships being held at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona Wis.
Indiana will begin its tee times at 10 a.m. ET Saturday for round three, with the fourth and final round scheduled for Sunday.
Indiana was tied for seventh after the first round with a 16-over 304. The Hoosiers came back with a 295 in round two for a total of 599, just four strokes out of first place. Defending champion Purdue leads the field at 571, with a 15-stroke lead over Michigan State (586). Ohio State is third (587), followed by Wisconsin (591), Northwestern (595), the Hoosiers, Minnesota (600), Penn State (609), Michigan (612), Illinois (616) and Iowa (627). Michigan's Ashley Bauer is the individual leader at -5 (137) after shooting a Big Ten Championship record 65 in the second round.
"This is the best start we have been off to at Big Tens since the 2006 season," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We had great play from top to bottom. Overall I feel pretty good. The course is set up to score and I think we took advantage of it for the most part and have ourselves in a decent position heading into the weekend.
Senior Laura Nochta leads the Hoosiers at tied for sixth with rounds of 72 and 73. Nochta was even after nine holes in round two, erasing a bogey on three with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole. She pared four of the first five holes on the back nine, recording her second bogey of the round on the par-4 12th hole. It was a smooth trip home for the final six holes as Nochta pared each to finish at 1-over.
Nochta was -1 through the front nine of round one, picking up birdies on one and five with just one bogey on six. She bogeyed 10 but came back to card a two on the par-3 12th hole. A bogey on 13 put her at even for the round, and she closed out with five straight pars.
Freshman Jacqueline Yanch moved herself up into a tie for 13th after posting rounds of 76 and 71 Friday. Yanch was 1-over after nine holes in round two, setting her up for a strong start on the back nine. She pared the first two holes before recording back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13 to move to -1 for the round. After pars on 14, 15 and 16, Yanch bogey 17 to drop back to even par. She rallied on 18 with her third birdie on the back nine, giving her the only under-par round by a Hoosier on the day.
Yanch started round one strong with pars on the first six holes before recording her first birdie of the day at the par-4 seventh hole. She remained at -1 until a bogey on nine, making the turn at even par. Yanch tallied five pars on the back nine but also recorded four bogeys, including back-to-back extra strokes on 17 and 18 to complete her round of 76.

Coons played the front nine strong in round two, just as she had done in round one, finishing at +1 thanks to a birdie on the par-4 seventh hole. She pulled herself up to even par with a birdie on 13, but it went for naught as that was followed by a double bogey on the par-4 14th hole. Coons bogeyed 15, but posted pars on 16, 17 and 18 to finish the day.
Coons started round one slowly with bogeys on one and three but picked things up to go -1 over the next six holes, finishing the front nine at +1. The back nine was not so kind to the freshman with bogeys on six of the first seven holes. She birdied 17 to drop back down to +6 but finished with a five on the par-4 18th hole for a round of 79.
Freshman Pamela Burneski is tied for 54th, coming back from an 80 in round one with a 78 in round two. After a birdie on 10, her first of the second round, Burneski bogeyed three of the next four holes to sit at +5 through 14 holes. She would par three of the next four to close the round.
Burneski had a rough stretch from holes three through six in round one, going +5 over that stretch, including a double bogey on six. She bounced back with three-straight pars to make the turn at +5. Her first birdie of the day on hole 11 moved her to +4, but she double bogeyed the 13th hole and tallied single bogeys on 16 and 18 to finish with an 8-over 80.
Junior Lauren Giesecke is tied for 59th with scores of 80 and 81. Giesecke bogeyed five of nine holes to open round two and made the turn at +5. Her struggles continued with bogeys on four of the next five holes, putting her at +9 through 14 holes. After a bogey on 15, she pared 16 and 17 before ending with her first birdie of the round on 18.
Giesecke was +3 through the first six holes in round one before recording her first birdie of the day with a three on the par-4 seventh hole. She pared eight and nine to make the turn at +2. A bogey on 10 was followed by a pair of pars, but a double bogey on 13, and a triple bogey on 17 after hitting her tee shot into the water left her with an 8-over 80 for the round.
