Indiana Rowing Competes at Big Ten Championships

LAINGSBURG, Mich. - The Indiana rowing team competed in the Big Ten Championships on Lake Ovid in Sleepy Hollow State Park on Saturday, May 1, and finished in seventh with 31 points. In a rough day on the water that included a heavy chop with high winds, the Hoosiers' first Novice 8 reached the Grand Final, while the rest of the Hoosier crews raced in Petite Finals.
Wisconsin was the Big Ten Champion with 148 points, while Michigan State finished in second with 132 points and Michigan placed third with 111 points. Minnesota took fifth with 66 points and Iowa placed sixth with 51 points.
In the first Novice 8 Grand Final, the Hoosiers finished fourth in 7:04.92. Wisconsin took first in 6:42.70, with Michigan in second in 6:45.44 and Michigan State in third in 6:53.37. IU's first Varsity 8 crew finished third with a time of 6:44.31 in its Petite Final. Iowa finish first in 6:29.22 and Minnesota placed second with a time of 6:31.14. The Hoosiers' second Novice 8 crew was just four seconds behind Iowa in their Petite Final as they finished third in 6:48.54. Minnesota took first in 6:42.09 and the Hawkeyes placed second in 6:44.71. In the second Novice 8 Petite Final, IU placed second to Minnesota (7:21.06) with a time of 7:32.54.
In the first Varsity 4 Petite Final, the Hoosiers finished third with a time of 7:56.83, following Minnesota (1st, 7:26.47) and Iowa (2nd, 7:38.04). IU's second Varsity 4 crew placed third with a time of 8:15.98, behind Ohio State (1st, 7:36.40) and Iowa (2nd, 7:51.68).
The morning session of heats were highlighted by IU's first Novice 8 crew edging Ohio State with a time of 6:49.47. The Buckeyes finished in 6:49.95, while Michigan finished in first with a time of 6:45.40. In the first Varsity 8, the Hoosiers recorded a time of 6:49.79, with Michigan State placing first in 6:25.12, Michigan in second (6:31.37) and Minnesota in third (6:44.31). IU's second Varsity 8 clocked a time of 6:58.68 to finish in fourth. Wisconsin finished in first (6:32.39), Michigan finished second (6:35.46) and Minnesota took third (6:51.04). In the first Varsity 4 race, the Hoosiers crossed the finish line in 7:50.56 for fourth place, while IU's second Varsity 4 crew also finished in fourth in their heat with a time of 8:35.72. Indiana's second Novice 8 crew recorded a time of 7:52.19 in its heat for third place, behind Wisconsin in first (6:57.04) and Michigan in second (7:12.39).
Sophomore Shifumi Terasaka was named to the First Team All-Big Ten, while sophomore Andrea Wensits earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, May 15, when they travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Aramark NCAA South/Central Region Sprints.
