OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Indiana rowing team competed at the Aramark NCAA South/Central Region with the Novice 8 crew advancing to Sunday's B final on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and the Hoosiers' first Varsity 8, second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 crews advancing to the C finals.
The morning session saw IU's second Varsity 8 crew just miss third place, finishing in 7:12.00, only a tenth of a second behind Central Florida (7:11.90). The Hoosiers beat Kansas State by nearly 27 seconds (7:38.72), and Southern Methodist placed sixth in 7:56.70. In the first Varsity 8, Indiana narrowly missed third by a little more than three seconds to Louisville. IU finished in 7:04.97, beating Tulsa by five seconds (7:09.96) with Dayton finishing in sixth at 7:27.09. In the Varsity 4, the Hoosiers finished in 8:16.70 behind Oklahoma (8:05.68). "We're a little disappointed we came up short for the A/B finals in the semis for the Varsity 8 and second Varsity 8. Losing by a second or two seconds is really just heartbreaking," IU head coach Steve Peterson. "All we can do now is prepare for the C finals tomorrow and the B final for the Novice 8, and continue to improve. Despite the setback we're still looking forward to performing at our best."
In the afternoon session, Indiana's Novice 8 crew beat Tennessee by nearly two seconds to take fourth and advance to Sunday's B final at 10:50 a.m. ET. In the Varsity 4 race, IU placed third in 8:21.49, beating Eastern Michigan by just under 20 seconds to advance to the C final at 10 a.m. In the second Varsity 8, the Hoosiers took second in 7:10.05, beating Tulsa by more than two seconds (7:12.25), with Alabama placing fourth (7:16.77) and Southern Methodist in fifth (7:28.35).
