BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Rowing sophomore Andrea Wensits was named a 2010 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I First Team All-Central Region honoree, which was announced by the CRCA on May 25.
Wensits, one of 60 student-athletes to be honored, is the third Hoosier to earn the honor (Laura Lazaridis-2005, 2006; Ellie Benson-2008, 2009). Out of the 60 student-athletes, the first and second team All-American awards will be selected following the NCAA Rowing Championships, May 28-30, in Sacramento, Calif.
"Andrea is the third student-athlete in our team's short history to achieve this honor and to be considered for the All-American team," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Like our first All-American (Laura Lazaridis '06), she learned to row here at Indiana as freshman. She came in as an amazing athlete, but what really made the difference for her was she really took the time to learn what it takes to be a great rower from her coaches and her teammates. Never did she rest or rely solely on her athletic abilities to be better than other people - she was always working to improve her technique and understanding of the sport, while she worked to get stronger. I have coached many National and Olympic Team athletes and Andrea really has the potential to go far in this sport if she dedicates herself to that. But for now, we are just proud to have her as a part of our team."
Each student-athlete selected on the all-region team is evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, how they rowed in their institution's boat for a minimum of 75 percent of the spring races or racing in a regional conference event. The student-athlete's 2,000-meter erg score is also a part of the criteria, while a coach must nominate each student-athlete.
