BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Hillary MacBain, a coxswain on the IU rowing team, is spending the summer training with the USRowing Women's National Team Pre-Elite Camp at Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia, Pa. MacBain was one of 20 athletes from across the country selected to participate in the camp, which would send crews to a number of national and international regattas throughout the summer.
The first such regatta for MacBain and her teammates was the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia, which took place this on July 3-4. MacBain coxed two events over the course of the weekend, and medaled in both.
In her first event, the women's open 4+, MacBain led her crew to a second place finish in their morning heat, and finished in silver medal position in the grand final later that afternoon behind a Riverside Boat Club crew from Boston, Mass. The following day, she would cox the Pre-Elite Intermediate 8+ to a gold medal in the grand final by 12 seconds with a time of 7:06.35.
Besides getting great racing experience, MacBain is also getting a head start working with one of her future teammates. Incoming IU recruit Catherine Campbell, was also one of the 20 athletes selected for the Pre-Elite camp and was in MacBain's gold medal winning eight.
"From the coaches' perspective, we encourage our athletes to spend their summer rowing/coxing to develop and improve upon their skills for the upcoming year," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Not only do they get extra water time rowing over the summer, they also can double the amount of racing experience they get. So it really has us excited to have both Hillary and Catherine training and racing together at this level during the summer."
Next up for MacBain, Campbell and the rest of the Pre-Elite camp will be US Club Nationals in Oak Ridge Tenn., on July 15.
