BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head rowing coach Steve Peterson has announced the addition of Megan Mitchell to the staff as the Hoosiers' Novice coach.
"I am extremely excited to have Megan joining our staff," said Peterson. "When she came for her interview, she immediately gelled with the athletes, our staff and everyone in the athletic department. We could not have found a better fit for our staff than Megan. Her enthusiasm and passion for the sport is obvious, and the experience she has from helping to build two successful collegiate programs at Central Florida and Oklahoma, should have an immediate impact on our team. We look forward to her helping us do the same here at IU as we continue to improve in the Big Ten and nationally."
Mitchell comes to Indiana after spending the last two years as the graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma, including the inaugural season of rowing at OU. For the Sooners, Mitchell assisted with on-campus recruiting and running Novice tryouts. She coached the 2008-09 Novice squad and the Varsity 4+ in the 2009-10 season, as well as created and coordinated team travel arrangements and assisted with fiscal year budget expenses and projections. She also assisted in event coordination and management of home races and regattas. Mitchell also worked closely with administration and the booster organization at Oklahoma to create program tradition and strong financial support.
Mitchell also served as a corporate rowing coach in Oklahoma City during the summers of 2008 and 2009, where she designed and implemented weekly learn-to-row practices for corporate workers of the Oklahoma City region. Her Advanced Corporate team won first place among 36 teams at the 2008 Head of the Oklahoma, while her Intermediate team won first place and her Novice boat finished second.
Prior to her time in Oklahoma, Mitchell was the graduate assistant coach for the University of Central Florida in 2007-08, serving in the same capacity as she did at Oklahoma. She was also an assistant coach for the Norwalk River Rowing Association in 2006 where she designed and coached daily practices for competitive and intermediate junior and master rowers in preparation to race at the 2006 Canadian Henley Regatta. There she advised junior athletes and parents on collegiate rowing and taught masters and juniors the basic skills and proper technique of rowing and coxing. In 2005, Mitchell was the Novice coach at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, Fla., where she also assisted in Varsity ad Junior Varsity boats.
"I am so excited to be a part of the IU Rowing staff and team," said Mitchell. "From the campus to the athletes, everything is in place for this program to take off. I am really looking forward to building a Novice program and working with Steve, Conny and Courtney to take the program to a new level."
Mitchell, a native of Orlando, Fla., received her undergraduate degree in Sport and Fitness from the University of Central Florida in 2007 and was a member of the Knights' Varsity Lightweight squad. She served as a team captain and was named the Most Inspirational Athlete in 2007, the Most Dedicated Athlete and the Lightweight team MVP in 2006-07. Mitchell received her Master of Education degree in Intercollegiate Athletics Administration from Oklahoma in 2010.
