ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Playing through less than ideal conditions in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Indiana women's golf team finds itself in sixth place after 36 holes of the Wolverine Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
This is a difficult course, and the weather conditions did not help today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We were pretty steady through the first round, but you could see some of those first-tournament jitters. You don't see a dramatic difference in the scores but I thought we played much better in the second round."
Indiana recorded rounds of 308 and 306 for a two-round total of 614 (+46). That is just five shots out of second place as Augusta State (609), Iowa State (610), Michigan (612) and the Hoosiers are bunched in the second through sixth spots. Florida International leads the tourney with a score of 593.
"We are in a good position, considering we did not play our best today," Wallman said. "We were a little sloppy in our short game, and we need to make every shot count. Because the greens here can be penalizing, we need to take our time and not take anything for granted. We can come out of this in a pretty good spot if we just stay patient."
In her first tournament playing in the No. 1 spot, sophomore Pamela Burneski is tied for eighth with a score of 150. Ever the steady player, Burneski recorded identical rounds of 75 on Saturday. Sophomore Kate Coons is in the 18th spot after rounds of 77 and 76 for a tally of 153.
In her first collegiate tournament, freshman Sophie Hayashi is off to a successful start in a tie for 36th with rounds of 78 and 79 (157). In her debut with Indiana, junior transfer Kristtini Cain is also tied for 36th with a score of 157. After a slow start in round one, posting an 81, Cain bounced back with a 76 on the final 18 holes of the day. Sophomore Jacqueline Yanch is tied for 40th after rounds of 78 and 80 (158).
