Vavra Takes Bronze at 2011 Pan Am Games

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Indiana University senior Allysa Vavra won a bronze medal in the 400-meter individual medley at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
American Julia Smit took gold with a time of 4:46.15, followed by Brazil's Joana Maranhao with the silver in 4:46.33.
Vavra took home her first international medal with a time of 4:48.05. That is the fourth-fastest time in the Indiana record books.
Vavra had the second-fastest qualifying time for the A final, winning her heat in a time of 4:53.76, two seconds behind Smit.
Vavra is not the only Hoosier competing at the Pan Am Games. Sophomore Brenna MacLean will swim for Team Canada later this week, while junior Amy Cozad and IU graduate Amy Korthauer will represent the USA in diving competition next week.
