LAS VEGAS, Nev. - After day one of the 30th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Indiana Wrestling is slotted 12th out of 34 teams and four Hoosiers remain in the competition. Redshirt senior Matt Powless still has a shot at the title, advancing to the semifinals Friday evening.
The second-seeded Powless took to the mat three times on the first day, posting a pin, major decision and 4-2 decision over No. 7-seed Alfonso Hernandez (Wyoming) to position himself two wins away from the 197-pound title. Powless' season record improves to 13-0.
Three additional Hoosiers are still battling it out in the wrestleback. Zach Zimmer (125 lbs) and Taylor Walsh (149 lbs), both redshirt freshmen, each made a run to the championship draw quarterfinals before suffering their first defeat. LeBlanc, meanwhile, dropped to the wrestleback in the second round before earning back-to-back wins to keep his third-place hopes alive.
There are numerous ways to keep updated on the Hoosiers on Day 2:
