BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A strong morning session which saw Indiana take 13 championship final slots set the Hoosiers up for a big scoring night as they extended their lead on day three of the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The Hoosiers take a 136-point lead over second-place Minnesota into tomorrow's final day, sitting in first with 531 points. The Golden Gophers have 395 points, with Ohio State third (302), Penn State fourth (275) and Purdue fifth (255.5).
"We had a great preliminary session," head coach Ray Looze said. "The girls set themselves up well and I was really thrilled with the finals tonight. I thought everybody put their hearts on the line."
Taylor Wohrley, Bronwyn Pasloski, Brenna MacLean and Margaux Farrell swam to a third-place finish in 3"34.68. That is a season best for the quartet and an NCAA B cut. It was the first of three races on the night for Wohrley as she also made the championship final in the 200 freestyle and her specialty, the 100 backstroke. She went a career best 52.73 on her opening 100 backstroke leg.
Junior Allysa Vavra is having the meet of her life, picking up her second Big Ten title in as many days with a victory in the 400 individual medley. Vavra posted a time of 4:04.59, which is a Big Ten, Big Ten Meet, school and pool record. Her time, which is an NCAA A cut, trumped the Big Ten record she had set in the prelims, going 4:05.42. Teammate Ashley Jones took third with a lifetime best 4:07.59. In the consolation final, Kim Tracey blew away her previous lifetime best, set this morning, by almost three seconds with a 4:13.74 to finish 10th overall. Brittany Barwegen was 15th with a 4:18.30.
Indiana went 1-2 in the consolation final of the 100 butterfly as Brittany Barwegen touched the wall in 53.80, an NCAA B cut. Brenna MacLean was right behind her for the 10th overall spot, posting a career best 53.95.
The Hoosiers placed an astounding five swimmers in the championship final of the 200 freestyle and came up with the second, third, sixth, seventh and eighth finishes. Brittany Strumbel led the way in second with a time of 1:44.63. She was followed by Farrell in third (1:45.39), Courey Schaefer sixth (1:46.50), Nikki White seventh (1:47.08) and Wohrley eighth (1:47.68). Sara Delay took 13th with a time of 1:47.80 in the consolation final.
Competing in her first individual final, sophomore Ashley Specht took fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a career time of 1:00.72. That is also good for NCAA consideration. Pasloski was seventh in 1:00.92, posting a career time of 1:00.81 in the morning prelims. Brittney Phelan swam the consolation final where she placed eighth and 16th overall with a time of 1:02.35. Her 1:02.24 in prelims is a career mark.
Wohrley's third race of the day saw her post a career best and NCAA automatic cut with a time of 52.28 in the 100 backstroke, good for second place.
Indiana had three divers in the championship final of the 3-meter springboard and freshman Laura Ryan picked up her second medal of the meet with a third-place score of 405.05. That is a new personal best by more than 100 points and she is just the second IU diver in school history to top 400 points in a six-dive event, joining Olympian Christina Loukas.
Senior Brittney Feldman placed fifth with a career best 391.20 points, while Gabby Agostino took eighth (356.15). The Big Ten also recognized Sportsmanship Award winners from each team and diver Heidi Mahnken was the Indiana honoree.
The meet concludes tomorrow with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving and 400 free relay. Prelims begin at 11 a.m., with the evening final session starting at 6 p.m.
