PALO ALTO, Calif. -
The Indiana Hoosiers (2-5) women's water polo team was defeated by No. 5 Hawaii, 8-3, in their second contest at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. After pulling to within one before the half, the Hoosiers could not keep up as Hawaii went on to score the game's final four goals.
"We competed with a very talented team for a majority of the contest," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "Hawaii brought a lot of tenacity on the defensive end in the second half and that was a key for them."
Lauren Wyckoff led the Hoosiers with two goals and Kara Butler notched one to round out the scoring attack.
Cassie Wyckoff recorded 10 saves in cage for the Hoosiers.
Lauren Wyckoff scored each of her goals in the first quarter, one on a breakaway after an assist by Nicole Redder and the second on a power play after a dish from Shae Fournier.
The Hoosiers trailed 4-2 heading into the second quarter, but Butler scored after earning a power play to make it a 4-3 deficit at the half. Fournier also assisted on the Butler goal.
Hawaii scored two goals in both the third and fourth periods, with two coming on six-on-five opportunities and another on a five-meter shot.
The Hoosiers will take on No. 4 UCLA at 9:10 a.m. PT on Sunday.
