SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers (7-9) women's water polo team battled No. 4 Hawai'i from start to finish on Friday at the 2011 Aztec Invitational, but a Rainbow Wahine goal in the final minute of play proved to be the difference as the Hoosiers fell 3-2.
"We did a lot of really positive things out there," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We brought a great amount of intensity on the defensive end and really competed throughout."
Amanda Redfern and Nicole Redder scored one goal apiece for Indiana, each coming in the opening period.
Cassie Wyckoff registered seven saves in the cage for the Hoosiers on 23 Hawai'i shot attempts. The Los Altos, Calif. native also picked up a steal in a complete 32 minutes of action.
Redder notched the first goal of the contest, turning in the post and firing a shot into the cage after an entry pass from Lauren Wyckoff at the 2:26 mark of the opening period.
Redfern added to the Indiana lead, driving up the right side and converting with 1:19 to play in the first quarter.
The Hoosiers locked down the Rainbow Wahine throughout the first eight minutes, using a combination of Wyckoff saves, tenacious defense, and field blocks. Shae Fournier finished the game with a team-high three field blocks, while Kara Butler and Jakie Köhli each added one. Hanna Eimstad led the Hoosiers in the steals department, racking up a trio of takeaways.
Hawai'i got on the board with 4:02 to play in the second period, scoring from long range. The Rainbow Wahine added a second goal with 48 seconds left in the half to knot things up 2-2.
The score would remain unchanged for the duration of the half and the entire third period.
Hawai'i went on to break the deadlock with a close-range power play goal with 56 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Hoosiers had a shot blocked and another stopped by the Hawai'i goalkeeper on its final possession.
Indiana will be back in action on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. against Cal State Bakersfield.
