SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers (8-9) women's water polo team defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 11-2, on Saturday at the Aztec Invitational, fueled by a five goal second period and a strong all-around defensive effort.
"I thought our defensive pressure really created a lot of opportunities for us," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We did a nice job of converting and I was pleased with our overall effort out there."
The Hoosiers received two goals apiece from Kelsey Campbell, Shae Fournier, and Jakie Köhli. Kate Dunn, Hanna Eimstad, Megan Jacobs, Kym King, and Amanda Redfern each added one score in the win.
Indiana got a stellar performance in the cage from Cassie Wyckoff, as the junior recorded nine saves, two assists, and two steals in 28 minutes. Liza Dernehl came on in the fourth period and registered a pair of saves in her first action of the season.
The Hoosiers roared out of the gates as Fournier fired in a long-range goal on the first possession of the game after an assist by Nicole Redder. Campbell followed with a counter-attack score with 3:05 left in the opening period after a precise outlet by Wyckoff to make it a 2-0 Hoosier lead.
Indiana's pressure defense allowed just three CSUB shot attempts in the first stanza.
Dunn got the second quarter scoring started with a goal after a Köhli assist. Less than a minute later, Lauren Wyckoff came up with a key power play steal and delivered a pass to Campbell in front of the cage, which she turned into her second goal to give Indiana a 4-0 lead with 4:40 left in the half.
Wyckoff came up with another assist 35 seconds later, finding Köhli immediately after the Burnaby, B.C. native earned a six-on-five chance, and she finished it with a score.
Köhli gave Indiana a six-goal lead with a breakaway score, marking her sixth multi-goal effort this season.
CSUB got on the board with 2:50 left in the half, scoring on a power play to cut the Indiana lead to five.
Redfern responded with a power play goal of her own after a dish from Meghan Lappan to give the Hoosiers a 7-1 halftime edge.
Indiana continued its strong attack in the third period, as Fournier notched her second score of the game on a close lob after an assist from Cassie Wyckoff. Fournier has scored two or more goals in six games during her freshman campaign.
King and Eimstad got the Hoosiers into double-digit scoring with a pair of late third period goals, making it 10-1 heading into the fourth.
CSUB scored a goal from the right side of the pool with 2:39 to play in the fourth quarter for the final tally of the game.
Jacobs scored during her first action of the 2011 season, firing in a goal with 54 seconds remaining.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. PT against No. 9 San Diego State. They will then wrap up the Aztec Invitational with a matchup against No. 18 UC San Diego at 5:30 p.m. PT.
