SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Lauren Wyckoff fired in a long-range goal with four seconds left to lift the No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers (9-9) women's water polo team over No. 9 San Diego State, 4-3, at the Aztec Invitational on Sunday.
"It was a tremendous win for this team," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We did some really solid things out there on both ends and we made a big play when we had to."
Wyckoff finished the game with two goals, both coming in the final 2:02 of the contest. Shae Fournier notched two first half goals in the win.
Cassie Wyckoff registered another solid performance in the cage, picking up 10 saves in a complete 32 minutes. She also picked up a pair of steals.
Fournier opened up the scoring at the 4:10 mark of the opening period, scoring on a power play after an assist by Kelsey Campbell.
Nicole Redder delivered a pass to Fournier in the second period, which the freshman converted with a long skip shot to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead.
The Hoosiers suffocating defense caused problems for the Aztecs throughout. Fournier added three field blocks, while Jakie Köhli added two and Campbell had one.
SDSU got on the board in the third quarter with a power play goal at the 4:10 mark of the period, followed by a counter-attack score after a missed Hoosiers six-on-five chance to make it 2-2 heading into the final stanza.
The Aztecs grabbed the lead with 5:46 to play on a tap-in power play goal.
Lauren Wyckoff evened things up with 2:02 left, capitalizing on a six-on-four chance, scoring after an assist by Meghan Lappan.
The Hoosiers had an opportunity to get the lead back when a Fournier shot hit the right post in the final minutes of the game, but Indiana would get another opportunity after a huge defensive stand.
The Hoosiers came up with the stop with 14 seconds left and Wyckoff delivered a pass out of the goalkeeper position to Fournier at mid-tank. Fournier quickly kicked it over to Lauren Wyckoff, who fired in a clutch shot from 10-meters into the upper-left corner of the cage to give the Hoosiers their first win over a top-10 team this season.
