In his first match of the day Kurt Kinser gave up an early takedown to Kyle Bradley of Missouri. At the 1:44 mark, Kinser scored an escape to move the match to a 1-2 score, which was the score to open the second period. Kinser scored an escape in the second to tied the match heading into the third. Kinser rode Bradley out on top throughout the third and fought off a shot in extra time for the takedown and the match, 4-2.
Paul Young started his day with a match against Donnie Tasser of Pittsburgh. The first period went scoreless, and Young elected to start the second. He scored the escape and quickly followed with a single-leg takedown. Tasser scored an escape before the end of the second. In the third period, Tasser elected to start on bottom and made it to his feet to put the score at 3-2 with Young in the lead. Young scored another takedown late with another single leg, taking the win 5-2.
Matt Powless started off the tournament with a match against Wyoming's LJ Helbig. Powless dominated the action in the first period, drawing a stalling warning on Helbig, and quickly notching a takedown thereafter. In the second, Powless chose bottom and escaped in just seven seconds. Twelve seconds later, he took Helbig down for a 5-0 advantage. Powless rode out the second for a 5-1 lead heading into the third. Powless took advantage of a neutral start with a takedown, release and another takedown. Leading 9-1 and holding a riding time advantage, Powless controlled Helbig for the rest of the match, taking a 10-1 major decision.
Ricky Alcala started the tournament against Spencer Myers of Maryland. Alcala scored a takedown in the first and Myers escaped. In the second, Alcala chose to start on bottom. He escaped quickly to move his lead to 3-1. A fleeing call gave Myers a point at the end of the second. Myers chose down and escaped early in the third. Alcala then had a nifty shot, switching from a single leg to a double for the takedown. Myers escaped and scored a takedown of his own, to take the lead 6-5. With :26 to go, Alcala got a restart on bottom, scored a reversal. Myers escaped to tie it up and sent the match to overtime. Alcala won the match with another shot, taking Myers down with a double leg.
ROUND TWOKinser matched up with No. 7 seed Mario Mason of Rutgers in the second round. After a scoreless first period, Mason chose to start on bottom and earned an escape to take a 1-0 lead. In the third, Kinser chose to start on bottom and earned an escape of his own. Overtime saw both wrestlers on scramble to avoid sudden victory. In tiebreakers, both wrestlers managed an escape. The second overtime also was scoreless. Mason managed an escape just before the buzzer in the next tiebreaker. Kinser reached his feet three times in the next tiebreaker, but Mason was able to hold on by getting to his ankle each time. The marathon match, saw Kinser fall 3-2.
In the second round, Young faced off with No. 5 seed Jesse Dong of Virginia Tech. Young collected three takedowns in the first period, and Dong escaped each time. Dong chose neutral in period two and neither wrestler scored. Young chose top in the third to preserve his riding time advantage, and Dong managed an escape. Young took him down to end the match and added a point for his riding time as well for the 9-4 decision.
Powless drew No. 9 seed Sonny Yohn of Minnesota in the second round. Yohn got on the board first with a takedown and got an early riding time advantage. Powless got a reversal late in the second after choosing bottom. Yohn got hit with a stalling call at the end of the second as well to put Powless up 3-2. Yohn couldn't get away throughout the period, but a late locking hands penalty sent the match to overtime. Powless dragged his toes for a takedown with less than :05 to go in sudden victory for the win, 5-3.
Alcala matched up with No. 2 seed Jarod Trice of Central Michigan in the second round. The first round went scoreless, and Trice elected to start on bottom. He easily escaped, as did Alcala in the third. The match headed to extra time, where neither wrestler scored in the first sudden victory period. In tiebreakers, Trice escaped quickly, as did Alcala in the third extra session. After another scoreless round on their feet, Alcala didn't score in his turn on bottom. Alcala broke Trice down flat in the next period and was quickly called for stalling. Trice was awarded a point and the match, 3-2.
