Powless, Alcala Clinch All-America Honors At NCAAs

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Matt Powless and Ricky Alcala became Indiana's 49th and 50th All-Americans in wrestling. Both won their matches in the consolation round of 12 to clinch All-America honors. Alcala astonishingly has gone to overtime in his first five matches in the tournament, winning four with overtime takedowns. Alcala won his consolation quarterfinal bout without OT, meaning he can finish no worse than sixth. Powless won 3-2 in the round of 12 to clinch All-America and fell in the quarterfinal. Powless will wrestle for seventh place on Saturday.
The two All-America finishes are the 75th and 76th honors earned by Hoosiers all-time in the sport. They are head coach Duane Goldman's 24th and 25th All-America honorees at Indiana. The Hoosiers
SESSION 3
Kurt Kinser started his day with a wrestleback match against Central Michigan's Donnie Corby. After a scoreless first period, Kinser elected to start the second on bottom. The second period ended scoreless as well, with Corby racking up 2:00 minutes of riding time. In the third, Corby got a quick escape and Kinser responded with a takedown. Corby escaped again, and, still holding his riding time point, circled to the win, picking up a stalling warning on the way to a 3-2 win.
Paul Young began his day with a quarterfinal match against No. 4 sed Bubba Jenkins of Arizona State. Much like Kinser's match, the first period ended scorelessly. In the second, Young escaped and Jenkins scored a takedown and Young escaped to end the period down 1-2. In the third, Jenkins scored a reversal. Young escaped again, needing to score to win. Jenkins successfully avoided the upset, getting a stalling warning on the way. Jenkins ended up taking the decision 4-3.
Matt Powless kicked off his day with a quarterfinal bout with No. 1 seed Cam Simaz of Cornell. Powless was aggressive early, getting in deep on a single leg, but Simaz was able to scramble out of it without any harm. Simaz followed that up with a double-leg takedown, taking Powless to his back. Powless in an effort to belly out, ended up in a cradle. Simaz got the pin in 2:20.
Ricky Alcala started his day off with a wrestleback match against JT Felix of Boise State. Alcala and Felix both went scoreless in the first and then traded escapes in the second and third periods. Sudden victory also went scoreless. In the first tiebreaker, Alcala got a quick escape and then took Felix down. The second tiebreaker saw Felix escape to move the score to 4-2. A stalling warning for Alcala was issued, but Alcala held on for a 4-2 win to advance in the wrestlebacks.
Alcala closed out the morning session with a match against No. 4 seed Dominick Russo of Rutgers. Alcala got out to a fast start, scoring a pair of takedowns on slide-bys in the first. Russo escaped after both takedowns and the first period finished with Alcala leading 4-2. In the second, Alcala elected to remain neutral, and it paid off as he took Russo down again with a slide-by. Russo escaped and got a penalty point for locked hands. Alcala entered the third period with a one point lead and a riding time advantage. Despite having three takedowns in the match, the referee didn't give Alcala any slack, hitting him three times for stalling in the third, sending the match to sudden victory tied at 7. Alcala recorded his fourth takedown of the match for the sudden victory 9-7.
SESSION 4
Young was the first to get a crack at All-America honors, facing off with No. 11 seed Walter Peppelman of Harvard in the round of 12. Young started off quickly with a takedown. Peppelman escaped and the two headed into the second frame with the score 2-1. Young chose a neutral start, and Peppelman responded with a takedown of his own to take a 3-2 lead, which went into the third after Peppelman accrued a riding time advantage. Young allowed Peppelman up from his start on bottom and quickly took him down to tie things up at four. He rode Peppelman's time advantage down to 1:00 exactly before Peppelman escaped to take a 5-4 lead. It was all scrambling from there, and Peppelman took the win 6-4 with riding time.
Powless was next to wrestle for All-America honors, taking on Joseph Kennedy of Lehigh. Powless scored an early takedown and Kennedy escaped to end the first at 2-1. Kennedy chose to start on bottom and scored an escape, taking the match to the third at 2-2. Powless escaped to take a 3-2 lead and the win. Powless clinched All-America honors for the first time in his career.
Alcala was up next and started off the match with a takedown and took a 2-0 lead into the second. Wade chose top and rode out the second period with Alcala getting hit for stalling twice, moving the match into the third at 2-1. Alcala elected a neutral start to the third and the wrestlers scrambled scorelessly until the :02 mark, where the official hit Alcala for stalling again, sending the match to extra time, which is no surprise for Alcala as all five of his matches in this tournament have taken additional time. Alcala came through with an winning takedown in overtime for the fourth time in the tournament. Alcala is an All-American for the first time, knocking off two seeded wrestlers along the way.
Powless finished his day with a consolation quarterfinal match with No. 5 seed Luke Lofthouse of Iowa. Lofthouse scored an early takedown and rode out the rest of the first period. In the second, Powless escaped with riding time at 2:00. Lofthouse scored another takedown to close out the second with a 4-1 lead. Lofthouse escaped from the bottom position to start the third and recorded two more takedowns to get the major decision with riding time, 10-2.
Alcala faced off with Levi Cooper of Arizona State in the consolation quarterfinal. He tallied a takedown in the first and Cooper escaped to move the match into the second at 2-1. Cooper scored an escape in the second, and the score was 2-2 into the third. Alcala scored a reversal in the third to retake the lead 4-2. Cooper escaped and a stalling warning for Alcala rounded out the match. Alcala won 4-3 to clinch no worse finish than sixth place.
