BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University junior Margaux Farrell and former Hoosier swimmer Kate Fesenko will compete at the 2011 World University Games, Aug. 14-19 in Shenzhen, China.
Farrell, who is a dual American-French citizen will represent France, while Fesenko will represent her native Ukraine.
Known internationally as the Summer Universiade, the multi-sport event takes place every two years and is considered the second largest international competition behind the Olympic Games. It boasts competitors from around the world and is open to student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28 who are less than one year removed from college or its equivalent.
They will join fellow Hoosier swimmers senior Ashley Jones and sophomore Taylor Wohrley, who will swim for the United States.
Farrell is coming off a strong junior season where she earned All-America honors in the 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships earlier this month in Austin, Texas. Farrell was part of the Big Ten Champion 800 free relay and finished third in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle at the 2011 meet.
"We are very excited to have Margaux make her first World University Games team this coming summer," said head coach Ray Looze. "This event has proven to be outstanding preparation for higher level competitions down the line."
Farrell earned her spot on the French squad after placing sixth in the both the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events at the recent French Long Course National Championships.
Fesenko is no stranger to the Games, having competed at the last event in 2009. She returns to international swimming after taking time off for the birth of her first child with husband and fellow IU swimmer Sergiy Fesenko.
"It is a pleasure to see Kate return to international swimming at her second World University Games this coming summer," Looze said. "This will be a fun competition where she can be successful and build momentum toward the 2012 Olympics."
A two-time Olympian, Fesenko won the 200 backstroke at the 2010 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and is the Big Ten record holder in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly. She was the Big Ten swimmer of the year in 2010 and is a seven-time individual Big Ten champion. She swept the 100 and 200 backstroke events at the Big Ten meet in each of her three seasons at IU.
