PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers (6-8) women's water polo team cruised to their fourth consecutive victory on Saturday, defeating Marist, 13-2, fueled by a shutout performance deep into the third period.
"It was a very solid team effort out there," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We did an excellent job of finishing opportunities when they presented themselves."
Jenna Roe led the Hoosiers in scoring with her first career three-goal performance. Shae Fournier, Meghan Lappan, and Nicole Redder each recorded a pair of scores in the win. Kelsey Campbell, Kate Dunn, Hanna Eimstad, and Lauren Wyckoff had one goal apiece.
Cassie Wyckoff finished with eight saves, two assists, and a steal in the cage for the Hoosiers.
Indiana wasted little time getting started, as Lauren Wyckoff scored during the game's opening minute after an assist from Lappan. Redder followed up with the only other goal of the period, firing a cross-cage shot past the goalkeeper after an assist by Fournier.
Fournier got on the board with a close lob shot at the 4:47 mark of the second quarter after a long assist from Cassie Wyckoff to put the Hoosiers up 3-0. The freshman finished the game with a career-high four assists, as well as five steals and a pair of field blocks.
The Hoosiers continued to apply the pressure late in the second stanza as Campbell and Dunn each recorded goals in the final two minutes of the period to extend the lead to five at the break.
Marist recorded their first goal with 5:42 to play in the third quarter, followed by their final score with 15 seconds left in the period to cut the Indiana lead to 5-2.
Indiana launched an offensive barrage in the fourth quarter, beginning with two straight Fournier to Lappan connections to extend the lead to 7-2. Lappan's two goals is a career-best for the freshman.
Fournier came through with her second goal of the contest later in the quarter, finding the net after an assist by Redder on a Hoosier power play. Thirty-four seconds went by before Redder added her second goal, fueled by a steal from Köhli during a Marist power play.
Eimstad kept the Hoosier momentum in full effect with a spinning goal from the post after an assist by Roe to make it 10-2 with 4:16 remaining.
Roe opened up a barrage of her own in the game's final four minutes, converting a trio of goals from the post to build the Indiana lead.
The Hoosiers will finish the weekend against No. 20 Maryland at 11:00 a.m. ET on Sunday.
