PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers (7-8) women's water polo team scored early and often in their weekend finale in Princeton, N.J. on Sunday, defeating No. 20 Maryland 13-8 for their fifth straight victory.
"We had a solid all-around effort this weekend," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We were strong on the defensive end and did a nice job of finishing offensively."
Nicole Redder registered her third consecutive multi-goal performance, leading the Hoosiers with three scores. Shae Fournier and Jakie Köhli had two goals apiece in the win. Katie Black, Kara Butler, Meghan Lappan, Amanda Redfern, Jenna Roe, and Lauren Wyckoff all added one for the Cream and Crimson.
Cassie Wyckoff had a stellar game in the cage for the Hoosiers, tallying a season-high 14 saves on 35 Terrapin shot attempts. The Los Altos, Calif. native has amassed six double-digit save games in 2011.
Lappan opened the scoring for the Hoosiers, converting a goal after the assist by Lauren Wyckoff. Indiana added their second score a minute later as Redfern delivered an accurate cross pass to Redder for the open shot and goal to make it 2-0 with 4:39 left in the first quarter.
Maryland notched their lone first period goal at the 2:49 mark, capitalizing on an Indiana turnover and finding the back of the cage.
Butler responded for the Hoosiers, earning a kick-out and quickly receiving a dish from Hanna Eimstad near the goal for a quick score to make it 3-1 after one period.
Indiana continued to dictate play with suffocating defense and a consistent offensive attack. Köhli led the Hoosiers with three steals in the contest, to go along with a pair of field blocks.
Fournier and Wyckoff extended the Indiana lead to 5-1 with goals in the first 50 seconds of the second quarter.
Maryland began to establish a rhythm offensively late in the quarter, but each score was followed by an Indiana goal to keep momentum on the Hoosiers' side.
Redder and Black converted the final two goals of the first half for the Hoosiers, making it a 7-3 Indiana lead before the Terps found the net with 33 seconds remaining in the half to pull within three.
Redder came up with the first goal of the third quarter after an assist by Lappan. Lappan followed it up with a steal and another helper, this time to Fournier for Indiana's ninth goal at the 2:54 mark.
Maryland added a score in the last minute of the third period to cut the Hoosier lead to four.
Köhli put away any Maryland comeback hopes with a pair of nearly identical power play goals from the left side to push the Hoosier lead to six.
Redfern gave Indiana their largest lead of the game with 5:20 to go, scoring after an assist by Redder to make it 12-5.
Maryland put in three scores late in the fourth period, along with another Indiana goal from Roe after an Eimstad assist.
The win gives Indiana a 5-4 edge in the all-time series for the Terrapins and the Hoosiers have won the last two meetings between the two CWPA schools.
