LEWISBURG, Pa. - The No. 12 Indiana Hoosiers (19-11, 3-2 CWPA West) women's water polo team seized the lead 31 seconds into the action against Maryland on Sunday and never trailed, claiming a 9-7 win to finish play at the Bison Invitational.
The victory marked a milestone for Indiana head coach Barry King, as it was his 300th career win. King has a record of 300-173-2 during his 14 seasons at the helm.
Lauren Wyckoff had three goals to pace the Hoosiers, while Shae Fournier and Jakie Köhli added two apiece. Kara Butler and Nicole Redder notched one score each.
Cassie Wyckoff picked up eight saves against the Terps in 32 minutes of action.
Köhli got the Hoosiers on the board early with a goal at the 7:29 mark of the opening period, which was followed 54 seconds later by a Wyckoff score to give Indiana a quick 2-0 lead.
Maryland notched its first goal of the contest with one second remaining in the first period to cut the IU lead to one heading into the second.
The Terps knotted things up with a goal at the 6:47 mark of the second period, but Wyckoff responded for the Hoosiers two minutes later with a score to regain the lead.
Redder increased the Indiana lead to two with a goal at the 2:46 mark of the period. Maryland came back with a goal of its own 33 seconds later, but Fournier answered with her first goal just before the half to make it a 5-3 Hoosier lead at the break.
The Terps registered the first goal of the second half to pull within one until Indiana responded with scores from Köhli and Fournier to grab its largest lead of the game, 7-4.
Maryland put together a two-goal run during the third period to once again get within one. Butler ended that Terp rally with a goal at the 1:39 mark of the third to give Indiana an 8-6 lead heading into the final period.
Maryland notched its final goal of the contest with 6:48 to play, making it an 8-7 Indiana lead until Wyckoff added the last score, completing her trio of goals with 4:33 left.
The Hoosiers will be back in action against Brown and Harvard on April 16 in College Park, Md., followed by a contest at George Washington on April 17.
