FIRST PITCH
Indiana is coming off a 3-3 roadtrip over the past two weeks, culminating with a weekend sweep at Penn State this past weekend. Morgan Melloh tossed a pair of shutouts and allowed just three hits in her 15 innings of work on her way to earning Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors for the second straight week.
The Hoosiers scored three runs in the eighth inning of game one against the Nittany Lions to earn the win and then plated the only run of game two in the top of the seventh inning to complete the sweep.
FAST NOTES
• Morgan Melloh was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week
• Melloh is just the second IU pitcher to ever receive the award on back-to-back weeks (Gina Ugo)
• As of Monday, Melloh leads the NCAA with 303 strikeouts
• She has joined Amy Unterbrink (1986) as the only two IU pitchers to record 300 or more strikeouts in a season
• She needs to take sole possession of 9th on the NCAA Career Strikeout List
• Entering play on Wednesday, Melloh has pitched 22.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run
• Since the start of the IU Classic, the Hoosiers are 10-3 overall and 7-1 at home
• In those 13 games, Sara Olson is hitting a team-best .421 with two home runs and nine RBI
• Breanna Saucedo has 29 career multi-hit games
• Freshman Meaghan Murphy has five games with 2 or more RBI this season
• Cassie Gogreve has thrown out 12-of-35 attempted base stealers this season (23 last year to lead BCS catchers)
• Ashley Warrum is hitting a team-best .338 (24-for-71) since being inserted into the everyday lineup
• The Hoosiers are 3-2 in extra inning games this season
• IU is also 7-5 in one-run games
• When Indiana scored three or more runs, they are 16-2
MORGAN MOWS `EM DOWN
Senior pitcher Morgan Melloh has started her Indiana career just as she did her Fresno State career - by being a workhorse in the circle and registering strikeout after strikeout. She has 23 complete games to her credit and 203.0 innings pitched to go with a Big Ten-best 303 strikeouts. Assuming she keeps up at this strikeout-per-game pace, she will have a chance to be the single-season leader in strikeouts at Indiana (370 by Amy Unterbrink in 1986).
She has 16 games with 10+ strikeouts, led by a 14-strikeout effort against No. 4 Florida in Palm Springs earlier this year and most recently a 17-strikeout performance against Butler that is tied for the most among any Big Ten pitcher this season. She followed that up with 14 strikeouts in the second game of the doubleheader against Butler. Most recently she posted a 14-strikeout game against No. 3 Michigan on her way to being named Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Melloh's career total of 1441 strikeouts puts her in a tie for ninth place on the NCAA career strikeout list.
OLSON DOES IT ALL
Senior Sara Olson has a 3-0 record in the circle this year and leads the team with a .364 batting average, seven home runs, seven doubles and 27 RBI. Her 12 multi-hit games are second on the team and she is hitting .406 with runners in scoring position. She has 24 career home runs to put her in a tie for sixth place on the Indiana career home runs list and her 87 career RBI are 11th-most in IU history.
