BELLEVILLE, Mich. - Due to poor weather conditions in Michigan, the Indiana rowing team competed in a shortened regatta on Belleville Lake on Saturday, April 16. The original schedule had the Hoosiers racing in two sessions, taking on No. 19 Oklahoma in the morning and Buffalo and Grand Valley State in the afternoon, but was shortened to just three races.
In the first Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers finished in 7:15.66, just two seconds behind No. 19 Oklahoma (7:13.79). No. 14 Michigan took first in 7:11.15.
"Both teams were ranked so we knew it would be a tough race," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Again, similar to the race with Louisville last week in the first Varsity 8, we were a little disappointed. I honestly feel like we let a lot of things distract us and we didn't really settle into a good rhythm. We didn't really have a good week of practice coming into this. Then having the racing delayed and then the schedule changing with the winds, we just didn't handle it well. In the race, we actually got off to a good start, led through the first 500 and at the 1,000 we were pretty even with Michigan and almost a length up on Oklahoma. Similar to the race against Louisville, we just let them get back through us."
In the second Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers beat OU (7:13.02) by three seconds for a time of 7:10.22, just behind Michigan (7:00.86).
"In the second Varsity, it was the almost opposite - they were slow on the line and didn't really have a good execution there," Peterson said. "I think their power and strength allowed them to get back to Oklahoma. But we just have to figure out how to get a little more discipline and focus on what we need to do and not let outside distractions effect us."
In the third Varsity 8 race, IU finished in 7:02.83, just four seconds behind the Sooners (6:58.07) and 10 seconds ahead of Buffalo (7:12.84). Michigan took first in 7:02.83.
"This week we are going to be focusing on those types of things to prepare for the DC trip and then we have three weeks to do some evaluation over student-athletes and lineups to prepare for Big Ten's," added Peterson.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, April 22, when they travel to Washington, DC, to take on Georgetown and George Washington.
