BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head rowing coach Steve Peterson announced season awards at the team's annual banquet at the Henke Hall of Champions on Monday, May 9.
This year's Most Valuable Rower, which is selected by the coaches as the individual who contributed the most to the success of Indiana Rowing, ended up going to two Hoosiers. Junior Shifumi Terasaka and freshman Asja Zero earned the program's highest honor.
"Our sport is not about individuals," said Peterson. "We will win or lose races based upon how well we work as a team. However, even in a sport like ours, there will always be people who rise up and lead the team through their actions and effort. This award is about recognizing those individuals who have done just that, and have helped to make 2010-11 the best season in Indiana Rowing history."
Terasaka, a native of Dublin, Ohio, is a two-time honoree after receiving the award in 2009. She was a 2009 First Team All-Big Ten honoree. Zero is a native of Pula, Croatia.
"Throughout the year, Shifumi and Asja two have pushed each other to new levels in every workout both on the water and on land," Peterson added. "And throughout the year, they have had fun doing that - always smiling and joking after a hard workout. They really have demonstrated how you can be extremely competitive and hard working, and have fun while doing it. They truly are the MVP's of the team this year."
Additional 2010-11 Indiana Rowing Awards:
Jackie Riedel, Team Sportsmanship Award - Awarded annually to the individual selected by her teammates as best representing the ideals and what it means to be a member of the Indiana University Rowing Program.
Katie Laine, Most Dedicated Athlete - Awarded annually to the individual selected by her teammates as the person who devoted herself to becoming the best athlete she could be in every workout both on and off the water.
Asja Zero, Pumping Iron Award - Selected by the Strength and Conditioning Coaches to acknowledge the Student-Athlete who most recognizes that preparation leads to excellence in competition.
Asja Zero, Academic Award - Selected by the Academic Support Staff and awarded to the Student-Athlete who exemplifies academic excellence and perseverance while striving to achieve their academic goals.
The Hoosiers open the championship season on Sunday, May 15, when they compete in the 2011 Big Ten Rowing Championship at Eagle Creek Reservoir, hosted by the Indianapolis Rowing Center.
