INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Indiana rowing team finished in sixth place with 53 points at the 2011 Big Ten Rowing Championships at the Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis on Sunday, May 15. This year's championship consisted of six, 2,000-meter piece finals. The Hoosiers finished ahead of Iowa, who ended up with 25 points. Ohio State won the team title with 142 points, followed by Michigan (124 pts.), Wisconsin (121 pts.), Michigan State (111 pts.) and Minnesota (68 pts.), respectively.
"Overall, the team did well," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "We had some boats that performed great and some that didn't do as well as we like, but the first Varsity 8 boat finishing in fifth is the best it's ever done in the Big Ten. We had some higher expectations but it was a sign as to how close the racing was going to be this year. We could have finished in fifth, we could have finished as high as third, we just didn't do it in the events that we needed to."
Indiana's first Varsity 8 crew recorded its best-ever finish in the Big Ten Championship regatta, despite fighting cool temperatures, rain and wind, with a time of 6:31.45 for fifth place, beating out Minnesota (6:32.03) at the finish line and topping Iowa (6:36.85) by five seconds. In the second Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers finished in sixth with a time of 6:44.23 to beat Iowa (6:47.96) by more than three seconds and just miss Michigan State (6:34.71) by nine seconds.
IU's first Varsity 4 boat finished in 7:25.96 for sixth place to beat out Iowa (7:33.61) by nearly eight seconds and just miss Minnesota (7:22.01) at the finish line by three seconds. In the second Varsity 4, the Hoosiers placed sixth with a time of 7:42.05 to beat Iowa (7:53.95) by 11 seconds. IU narrowly missed fifth place and Minnesota by five seconds.
Indiana's first Novice 8 finished in seventh with a time of 6:57.66, just missing Iowa (6:51.52) in sixth by six seconds, while the second Novice 8 finished in 7:12.66 for sixth place, beating Iowa (7:18.88) by six seconds and narrowly missing Minnesota (7:07.99) by five seconds.
"This is a best step for our team," added Peterson. "We're in the races, we are racing with people and it's a sign that we've improved, not only with the technical aspects but also with the attitude of the athletes. There are definitely things that we are going to work on and focus on for next year. This is a huge step forward for our team and to be knocking on the door with some of the other teams is a good sign."
Two Hoosiers earned All-Big Ten honors as freshman Asja Zero was named to the first team and junior Shifumi Terasaka was named to the second team. Junior Cara Donley was named IU's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.
