BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University Athletics Department is mourning the passing of Doug Blubaugh, who died in a motorcycle accident on Monday in Tonkawa, Okla. Blubaugh served as the IU Head Wrestling Coach from 1973-84.
As head coach of the Hoosiers, he mentored a pair of Big Ten champions and All-Americans. His star pupil, Sam Komar, finished second at the 1977 NCAA Championships and helped the Blubaugh-led Hoosiers to a 16th-place showing in the team standings, IU's best finish since 1965.
Blubaugh's career on the mat is one of the most storied in American history. After winning the 1957 National Championship while wrestling at Oklahoma State University, the three-time All-American took home gold at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Blubaugh was named "Most Outstanding Wrestling in the World" following his victory over the previously unbeaten Emam Ali Habibi in the golf medal match.
Blubaugh and his sons owned the Top of The World Sports Camp on Fox Hollow Road in northern Monroe County.
