Alcala, Powless Named to NWCA All-Academic Team

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - All-American wrestlers Ricky Alcala and Matt Powless are two of just 92 grapplers across the country named to the All-Academic Team, presented by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). It is the third consecutive year for each Hoosier to earn the prestigious accolade.
A total of 15 Hoosiers have earned the recognition since 2001.
"Being able to recognize our coaches and their teams for the accomplishments that they have made academically is always a high point at the end of the season for our staff," said Mike Moyer, NWCA Executive Director. :All of the athletes that have made this year's team are setting themselves up for success once they leave college, they are becoming leaders of the future."
To qualify for the All-America Team, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule - and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is have a 3.0 cumulative and been an NCAA All-American.
On this year's All-Academic Team there are 92 total athletes, three NCAA Champions, five NCAA Runner-Ups, 28 All-Americans and 83 NCAA Qualifiers.
Alcala and Powless each made their way to the All-American stand in 2011. Alcala finished in fifth place of the heavyweight division while Powless came in eighth at 197 pounds.
