BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana freshman rower Asja Zero was named First Team All-Central Region, while 10 rowers were named 2011 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athletes, announced by the CRCA this week.
Zero, a freshman from Pula, Croatia, was honored after being named First Team All-Big Ten and IU's co-MVP during her rookie season. She is now eligible for All-America status, which will be selected following the NCAA Rowing Championships on Sunday, May 29.
"Asja receiving the all-region honors is well deserved," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Upon her arrival in Bloomington, she has really applied herself to becoming the absolute best student-athlete she can be, and it shows in every workout and race she has been in. She is truly a leader on this team, and the fact that she is only a freshman only makes this award even more impressive."
Also, 10 Hoosiers earned Scholar-Athlete honors, which is the most selected in IU Rowing history. IU's list of 10 also ties the Hoosiers as the top Division I program with Ohio State and Oklahoma.
"We are extremely excited to have so many of our athletes earn this honor," said Peterson. "From day one this year we have stressed the importance of not only working hard in practice, but working hard in the classroom as well. We set some pretty high standards for the team academically this year and the student-athletes have really stepped up to the challenge. Obviously these 10 are the athletes who have earned this honor, but everyone on the team has really worked to improve our team GPA."
Requirements to be a CRCA Scholar-Athlete is that a student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event, and the head coach of the student-athlete's institution is a member in good standing of the CRCA. Student-athletes must have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or higher for her career.
"Having 10 scholar-athletes is amazing," added Peterson. "It is the most we have ever had in a single year, and it is the most of any Division I institution this year. I can't stress enough how excited we are as a coaching staff to see so many of our athletes earn this honor."
