BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - IU head rowing coach Steve Peterson has announced the addition of Elena Humphreys as the Hoosiers' new graduate assistant.
"We are extremely excited to have Elena joining the Hoosier rowing staff," said Peterson. "Elena brings with her a wealth of experience as both a coach and student-athlete of a very successful Cal rowing program. She knows personally what it takes to succeed as a student-athlete both on the water and in the classroom and I know she will be an invaluable resource to all of the athletes on our team."
Humphreys comes to Indiana after a successful career at the University of California, Berkeley. As a student-athlete, she was a three-time member of the Pac 10 All-Academic First Team and a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Scholar-Athlete. She was also a 2009 Pocock Second Team All-American. Her 2009 Varsity 8 crew finished in second at the Pac 10 Regional Championship and third at the NCAA Championships. She was also a member of the 2008 Pac 10 Champion Varsity 8, which finished in fourth at NCAA Championships. In 2006, Humphreys was a member on Cal's freshmen crew, which was part of the Golden Bears' National Championship run.
Humphreys, a native of Carmichael, Calif., also enjoyed success with US Rowing, winning a national title with the Women's Junior A pair in the summer of 2004 and being a part of the 2006 National Team Freshman Camp.
After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Peace and Conflict Studies, Humphreys spent the 2010-11 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Cal working with the Novice boats.
