BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team opened its 2011-12 season Saturday with round one of the IU Fall Kickoff at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington. The Hoosiers are currently second after 18 holes with a round of 305 (+17).
"We saw moments of brilliance, but we also did some `first-event' things that we need to clean up, mainly in the short game," said head coach Clint Wallman. "I would not say we were rusty, but we need to get back into that collegiate golf competitive mode.
"I am looking forward to tomorrow and think we can really improve upon these scores."
Junior Rosie Davies leads the Hoosiers and the entire field after posting a round of 72 Saturday. Competing as an individual, junior Pamela Burneski is tied for fourth with a 75 in the books. Senior co-captain Kristtini Cain is tied for sixth (76), while fellow captain, junior Kate Coons, is tied for 10th with a 78.
Sophomore Sophie Hayashi is three spots back in a tie for 13th after tallying a 79 over 18 holes. Freshman Elizabeth Tong carded an 84 in her first collegiate tournament, good for a tie for 25th. Fellow newcomer Kamryn Klawitter is tied for 39th with an 85.
IUPUI leads the seven-team field with a score of 303 (+15). Indiana State is five strokes back of the Hoosiers (310), followed by the University of Indianapolis (314), Valparaiso University (336), Franklin College (344) and Christian Brothers College (378).
The tournament concludes Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the final 18 holes.
