BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's golf team came back with a round of 297 Sunday to win the IU Fall Kickoff by nine strokes over second-place IUPUI and Indiana State.
The Hoosiers finished with a two-round total of 602 (+26). The Jaguars placed second at 611 (+35), along with the Sycamores. University of Indianapolis was fourth (624), followed by Valparaiso (665), Franklin College (686) and Christian Brothers (768).
Junior Rosie Davies won her first tournament as a Hoosier, carding a 72 on Sunday to finish with a two-round total of 144. Teammate senior Kristtini Cain tied for second and tied for the low round of the day with a 1-under 71 to complete the tourney at 3-over (147).
"One of the major high points today was seeing Rosie win her first college tournament," said head coach Clint Wallman. "The team victory was big too. They had to come from behind to win and they came out and played focused."
Junior Kate Coons tied for ninth with a 77 on Sunday giving her a 155 for the weekend (+11). Junior Pam Burneski also finished ninth with an 80 on Sunday (75-80). Sophie Hayashi tied for 14th with tourney rounds of 79 and 81 (160), while freshman Elizabeth Tong bounced back from an 84 on Saturday to post a 77 on Sunday and finished tied for 18th (161).
Rounding out the Hoosier contingent was freshman Kamryn Klawitter, finishing tied for 31st with an 86 on Sunday (85-86).
"No doubt this tournament has been a huge benefit for us," Wallman said. "We were able to identify things we need to work on in a tournament setting.
"I told the team, `you have to learn how to win,'" Wallman said. "This tournament provided that kind of confidence and gives us a positive note heading into Michigan State."
The Hoosiers are back in action Sept. 17 and 18 at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.
