BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - More than 1,469 runners bravely faced the Indianapolis heat last weekend to tie on their shoes and complete 13.1 miles in the Indianapolis Women's Half Marathon. Of those, more than 25 were members of the Indiana University women's rowing team. After the racing was complete, many of the team members stayed up in Indianapolis to cheer on their fellow Hoosiers with 24 Sports One Team pride at the football season opener against Ball State at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Three IU rowers placed in the top 100 of the overall place rankings, as well as finished highly within their age group divisions. Asja Zero and Katie Laine were the highest-ranking rowers to complete the marathon, both finishing with a speedy time of 1:51:22.9. Miranda Hoegberg was the final IU athlete to make the top 100, with 1:52:55.8.
A fellow member of the IU athletic family also represented the University proudly. Assistant cross country coach, Rebecca Walter, finished 12th overall and first place in her age group.
Sophomore Gracie Barbara stated that training with a mix of small to medium length runs was a smart way to prepare rather than strictly hammering out continuous lengthy workouts. "Not only was it good for my body, but also for my mentality as I became more comfortable with pushing myself to my limit."
The women supported each other all the way through the finish line, enjoying competition and supporting their fellow IU athletes.
