BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The summertime is the perfect opportunity for rowers of all ages and skill levels to further expand experiences on the water through various camps and competitions.
Kathryn Laine, an IU junior, applied and was accepted to row at the Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia on the Schuykill River to learn about, "what it takes to compete at the next level, how big of a commitment it is, but also how great the rewards can be." Working with athletes from all over the country and from a variety of backgrounds, Laine competed in the Vesper Lightweight Quad at U23 World Trials in on June 28-29 in Mercer, New Jersey. The women came in second at trials, narrowly missing cutoff.
But the women didn't stop there. Not to be discouraged, they continued working and learning and went to compete at the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia, Club Nationals, and the Canadian Henley.
At the Henley, all the work paid off. Laine, who competed in three boats, all of which won gold, (U23 Ltwt Double, U23 Ltwt Quad, and the Senior 8+) was grateful for the experience and is already looking forward to returning to the water next summer with many of the same rowers, all with their sights set on worlds.
