BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second time this season, senior midfielder Alec Purdie and junior goalkeeper Luis Soffner have earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.
Purdie is the offensive player of the week for the second time this season, sharing this week's award with Ohio State's Chris Hegngi. Purdie tallied his Big Ten-best third game-winning goal of the season in Indiana's 1-0 win over No. 16 Penn State Friday night. Purdie now has a team-best five goals on the season and leads the Big Ten Conference in points (12), points per game (1.50), goals per game (0.62) and is tied with Hegngi for the top spot in goals scored.
Soffner's second defensive player of the week award comes after posting his fourth solo shutout of the season in the win over Penn State. Soffner has not allowed a goal over the last 339:29 minutes and has already surpassed his shutout total from the 2010 season. Against the Nittany Lions he was credited with two saves and ranks second in the Big Ten in saves with 33. He currently leads the conference in goals-against average (0.49), save percentage (.892) and saves per game (4.12).
The Hoosiers continue Big Ten play this weekend as they travel to Madison, Wis. to take on the Badgers Sunday, Oct. 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
