Chalfant Wins Heavyweight Title at Keystone Classic

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Redshirt junior Adam Chalfant brought home the 2012 Keystone Classic heavyweight title, winning four straight bouts to earn the individual championship. Four more Hoosiers placed in the competition, resulting in Indiana finishing fifth out of 15 schools.

Fellow redshirt junior Ryan LeBlanc took five of six bouts to place third at 165 pounds while true freshman Quin Murphy (133 lbs), redshirt junior Eric Roach (141 lbs) and redshirt sophomore Taylor Walsh (157 lbs) each finished in fifth place. Meanwhile, the eighth-ranked heavyweight in the country improved his season record to 12-1 after a run to the heavyweight crown.
Chalfant's championship-capping triumph came over the 5th-ranked heavyweight in the country, Mike McMullan of Northwestern. Chalfant cruised through his first two bouts with a pair of major decisions by a combined score of 29-6 before a hard-fought 3-2 decision over American's Blake Herrin in the semifinals. He topped McMullan, 5-3, in the finals.
LeBlanc's only defeat on the day came in the second tiebreaker versus Nigel Jones (North Carolina State) in the quarterfinals. He responded by securing back-to-back victories in the wrestleback to earn a third-place finish. LeBlanc is now 13-2 on the year with two major decisions, a tech fall and four pins.
Three of Walsh's four wins were accompanied by bonus points, recording two pins and a major decision. He now has five falls this season and 18 for his career.
Roach and Murphy each entered the circle seven times and had their hand raised after five of those bouts. After dropping his first match of the tournament, Murphy battled his way through the wrestlebacks to find the stand.
Additional multi-match winners were Ryan Konz and Sawyer Morris with three wins while Joe Duca, Geno Capezio and Joe Randazzo each snagged a pair of victories.
Indiana now gets a two-week break from competition, next taking the mats for the Hoosier Duals on Dec. 1. The Cream and Crimson will face SIUE, Bucknell and Gardner Webb in Bloomington on that date.
