Hoosiers Earn Tough Road Win at EMU, 19-18

YPSILANTI, Mich. - A late pin by redshirt sophomore Taylor Walsh proved paramount in Hoosier Wrestling's 19-18 (TB) road victory at Eastern Michigan (4-6). Indiana's 36-33 match-points advantage was the ultimate difference, improving the Hoosier season record to 6-3 after the tiebreaker victory.

Indiana wins the dual on the third tiebreaker criteria (most match points), 36-32
Eastern Michigan took the first two bouts, including a fall, to jump out to a 9-0 lead heading into the heavyweights (dual started at 184 pounds). Adam Chalfant, ranked ninth nationally, then put IU on the board with a 9-2 decision over Anthony Abro.
Following another Eagle triumph at 125 lbs., Quin Murphy picked up Indiana's second win of the day. The true freshman built an early 5-0 edge and rode it out for a 10-4 decision, pulling the Hoosiers within 12-6.
The next two bouts were decided by a lone point and split between the two school. Eric Roach was responsible for Indiana's three team points, topping Seth Schaner, 3-2, at 141 pounds.
A pair of nationally-ranked grapplers faced off at 157 pounds, pitting #25 Taylor Walsh vs. #30 Aaron Sulzer. The bout lived up to the billing as Sulzer's 5-4 advantage in third period was quickly erased when Walsh's reversal placed Sulzer straight to his back and Walsh completed the fall moments later at the 5:40 mark. Walsh's sixth pin of the season and 19th of his career evened the team score at 15-15 with two bouts remaining in the dual.
Ryan LeBlanc tallied two takedowns, an escape and the riding time bonus en route to his 6-2 decision over Jacob Dorulla. LeBlanc, the 17th-ranked 174-pounder in the country, moved to 16-4 on the year and gave Indiana its first lead of the day.
In the final bout, Cheney Dale and Jacob Davis battled to a 1-1 stalemate at the end of regulation. Davis was able to notch a takedown in the first sudden victory period, however, earning a 3-1 decision and matching the team score at 18-18.
The first tiebreaker criteria is total of bouts won. Each team won five bouts. The next tiebreaker is total number of falls and technical falls, which was even also at 1-1. Thus, the third tiebreaker criteria was utilized ... total match points. Indiana held a 36-32 upperhand in that category, securing the 19-18 dual winner.
The Cream and Crimson jumps back into tournament on Dec. 29-30, competing in the 50th Annual Midlands in Evanston, Ill.
