TROY, N.Y. - The No. 11 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (11-3, 1-0 CWPA West) defeated Marist, 9-3, to win their fifth straight contest and third on the day at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Hoosiers shut out the Red Foxes for three periods en route to the victory.
Sophomore Shae Fournier led the charge offensively for the Hoosiers with a hat trick. Senior Hanna Eimstad had a pair of goals and freshmen Alexis Jones, Alynn Reade, Shelley St. Omer Roy, and Shelby Taylor had one apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff recorded 15 saves and allowed one goal in 29 minutes of action. Freshman Jojo White came on midway through the fourth period and notched a pair of stops.
Eimstad opened the scoring attack for the Hoosiers with a power play skip shot early in the first quarter after an assist by sophomore Meghan Lappan.
Wyckoff notched a five-meter save late in the first and it was followed by a Taylor goal with three seconds left in the period to take a 2-0 lead.
St. Omer Roy recorded her goal in the second period to give IU a 3-0 lead on a power play after an assist by Colleen McNaught. McNaught finished the game with a team-high three assists.
Fournier went to work in the third quarter, scoring the only two goals of the period to extend the IU lead to 5-0. Fournier also posted team-highs of five steals and three field blocks in the win.
Eimstad added to the IU lead early in the fourth after a McNaught dish. The Hoosiers continued their shut out until Marist connected from long range at the 4:27 mark to cut the IU lead to five.
Indiana came back with goals by Reade and Fournier during the middle of the fourth to give the Hoosiers an 8-1 advantage.
In between two late Marist scores, Jones notched the final Hoosier goal with :28 seconds to play to seal the 9-3 victory.
The Hoosiers will round out play in Troy, N.Y. against No. 14 Maryland on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
