TROY, N.Y. - The No. 11 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (10-3, 1-0 CWPA West) held off a feisty second half rally by Brown to notch their fourth consecutive win, 12-11, in a performance that included senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff setting the IU all-time saves record.
Sophomore Shae Fournier posted a career-high five goals to lead the charge for the Hoosiers. The freshmen duo of Colleen McNaught and Shelby Taylor had two goals apiece, while senior Hanna Eimstad, freshman Alexis Jones, and freshman Alynn Reade had one each in the win.
Wyckoff grabbed 12 saves against the Bears to increase her career total to 900, surpassing Jessica Goldner's saves record of 891 set in 2005. The double-digit save outing marks Wyckoff's 11th of the 2012 season.
The Hoosiers grabbed the early 2-0 lead after goals by Eimstad and Fournier, but the Bears responded with back-to-back goals to knot things up at the 2:16 mark of the opening period.
Indiana answered back with two straight goals of their own by Reade and Taylor, each coming after an assist by McNaught to put the Hoosiers up 4-2 at the end of the first.
After an early second period Brown goal, the Cream and Crimson went on a four-goal run to grab a commanding 8-3 lead. Fournier and McNaught converted the first two goals of the period on power plays.
Wyckoff nabbed the record setting save during the middle of the quarter and quickly fired a lengthy assist to Fournier for the counter attack goal for the Hoosiers' seventh score. Taylor followed that up with a six-on-five goal after a Fournier assist.
Brown finished out the half with a late goal to cut the deficit to four.
Early in the third, Taylor drew the five-meter foul and Fournier converted the penalty to put the Hoosiers on top 9-4.
As the Hoosiers looked to pull away, Brown answered with a four-goal rally to cut the deficit to one with two minutes to play in the third. The Hoosiers grabbed momentum back with goals by Jones and Fournier in the final minute of the period to give IU the 11-8 lead heading into the fourth.
The Bears scored during the opening minute of the fourth to briefly pull within two, but McNaught responded for the Hoosiers with her second goal of the contest.
Brown countered with a pair of goals, including a long range lob to cut the Indiana lead to one with two minutes to play.
The Indiana defense rose to the challenge in the waning moments as Fournier rejected a Brown shot attempt, allowing the Hoosiers to run out the final seconds.
The Hoosiers are back in action in their third game of the day, taking on Marist at 4:45 p.m.
