AUBURN, Ala. - A top-five finish from Allysa Vavra in the 400 individual medley highlighted day two for the Hoosiers at the 2012 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the James Martin Aquatic Center in Auburn, Ala.
Indiana is currently in 13th place with 75 points. California leads the way with 311 points, followed by Georgia (247), USC (226), Arizona (226), and Stanford (222).
Vavra posted the second-fastest time in school history in the championship final, touching the wall in 4:01.73, which was good for fifth. That was just off her school record of 4:01.41 set at the Big Ten Championships in February. Her prelim swim of 4:02.81 goes down in the IU record books as the third-fastest time ever.
Vavra holds the five-fastest times in school history, with the top three times all coming this season. She matched her 2011 NCAA finish and earns All-America honors in the event for the second-straight season.
Sophomore Laura Ryan made her first-ever championship final, finishing eight on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 330.40. She advanced to the evening session after posting a score of 328.50 in prelims.
Senior Margaux Farrell finished 11th in the 200 freestyle after posting a time of 1:44.90 in the consolation final. She finished 12th in prelims with a time of 1:44.74.
Senior Brittany Strumbel was 17th, just missing a spot in consols with her time of 1:45.27. Sophomore Lindsay Vrooman won her heat and placed 21st overall with a career-best time of 1:45.78. Senior Nikki White was third in her heat and 34th overall with a time of 1:47.10.
In the prelims of the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Allie Day, Ashley Specht, Brenna MacLean and Justine Ress finished 20th with a time of 1:40.08.
Sophomore Brenna MacLean placed 48th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.47. Junior Ashley Specht placed 34th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.41.
Junior Taylor Wohrley led the Hoosiers in the 100 backstroke with a finish of 31st, posting a time of 53.54. Freshman Allie Day posted a career-best time of 53.83 to finish 39th overall. Freshman Justine Ress was 54th, touching the wall in 54.00.
Indiana closed the night with the 800 free relay as Strumbel, Vrooman, Farrell and White picked up honorable mention All-America honors with an 11th-place finish, posting a time of 7:04.95.
